Parking brake fell apart

Well, the lining fell off anyway. Driver's side rear parking brake - liner on both shoes came right off the metal and was banging around in there. It was very loud when it first happened. I pulled over and checked as much as I could but found nothing obvious. I drove on home and it seemed ok. Then the next day I had the big shudder/vibration and then it struck me....parking brake! They froze up on my before. This time they fell apart. I hate this parking brake design with the shoes/drum setup inside the rotor. I'm tempted to just disconnect them and forget it. Rust builds up on the lip of the drum and it takes forever to get the rotor/drum combo off after they've been on awhile. I guess I'll go buy some new shoes and fix it.

Did they redesign the parking brake setup in the newer models? I have the 2004 (new body style).

I don't know if it's different on the 09+, but I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks back on my way to a Packer game. When I took the rotor off, the pad on the drum shoes was just destoyed, looked like gravel. Got some new shoes and stuck some caliper grease on the actuator to keep it from freezing up again, as that's happened as well. I thought about taking the shoes out and leaving them that way, but I do use my parking brake occasionally.

Volvo's are known for exploding e brakes. I guess we now know where that came from... Also, on a sad note, volvo dealers will do NOTHING for you if the e brake fails and destroys the rotor even if under warranty. Pretty crappy way of doing business if you ask me...

Question. I just bought the new shoes. I didn't pay much attention when I had the wheel off the last time....but do I need any special tools to replace the shoes or will it be pretty simple with common tools?

I would like to know this as well. Had mine apart about a year ago and don't remember what it looked like inside. Purchased new shoes and a new hardware kit for my 07 screw and not even sure if i am going to have the tools to install them this weekend. Is there anything special i need to do this or that i should know before attempting the install

Mine did the same thing.

I heard a grinding sound in drivers parking brake. Pulled the rotor/drum off and the pieces just fell apart. I think I had it way loose out of adjustment from when I changed rotors.

To remedy situation, I just disconnected broken brake, and took all parts out. Then I check the other side out, and set it for proper adjustment. I never use it anyway, and the brake on one wheel still seems to work ok.

You should be able to do it with common tools. I would get a Haynes manual and follow along, they should have pictures in there. Otherwise, if you have one good brake still set-up, just look at that and mirror it.
