P0171 and catless

Hi! I did search but can't find my particular case then I'm looking for help.

I have a 2004 5.4L 180,000 miles. It has been failing without any codes. and i has been doing some maintenances and fixes.

The symptoms:
Low power specially at WOT
Rough operation at idle
Shows P0171 Code only. lean bank 1

CATLESS: Because i suspect are clogeds. Now drives a little better, more response but still feel low powered and rough idle.

CHANGE SPARKS PLUGS: Definitive much better, Better trottle responce and better idle.

CHANGE FUEL FILTER: I think after replaced works great I really think i fixed but...

PUT A BOTTLE OF CHEVRON INYECTOR CLEANER: After some miles start to have a rough idle some and loss of power at any speed.

CLEAN MAF and ADMISION TROTTLE BODY: works better but still the same.

What else can i do?

I plan to install cats as soon as i can right now i donlt have the money to do it.

Thanks for your help!

Reach around the back of the plenum and see if your PCV elbow is bad. It's a very common problem and a cheap fix.

Also check all your vacuum hoses for leaks this too will throw that code.

Good luck.

Is this a vertical port with 2 little screws driver side? This appears to be ok but how can i test it?

No screws it should between the plenum and the fire wall. Find the PCV hose on the passenger side valve cover and follow the hose up. Should be right in the middle of the back of the plenum-sometimes it's a booger to get to. That elbow gets cracked or burns thru and leaks air causing a lean condition.

That code can also be caused by an exhaust leak.

Good luck.

Thanks! I'll check PCV tomorrow! My truck appears to have a exhaust leak. I'll check it also.

The elbow is behind the engine by the firewall, where the hose from the PCV goes into the back of the intake manifold.

Just follow the PCV line all the way to the opposite end of the valve cover. I have found on a couple of truck, that there was no elbow there, but the tubing had slipped off of the nipple on the back of the intake, and on one, the hose had split on the side where it connected to the intake.

Ok. I'm still with problems. In this motor 5.4L 3V there is no PCV elbowlike in other ford motors.

UPDATE

Now i have a P1000 and P2198, besides the original P0701

After the truck visited the shop. I received with the P1000 code and P0171 in the shop they only make inspections, they really don't change anything. They suggest to clean injectors with some chemical and i refuse.

Only for discard, I take apart the injectors and send them to a shop for clean in a machine. they pack the sensors with 99-100% efficiency, They have about 95% efficency before they cleaned those.

I ionstalled the injectors and after driveng some miles, appears the P2198.

Remember I'm runing catless at this point.

Please help. I'll appreciate.

No cats, - your going to need an engine soon I expect. Their not tuned to run this way. You can't just cut stuff off and then question why it isn't working right. It doesn't work that way lol.

I'm not planing to keep my truck catless. THe P0171 start even before i cut the cats.

At this moment I'm evaluating if install a used but newer OEM or magnaflow cats.

If newer used cats, they are using only 1 cat per side. The same with magnaflow and i'm searching if this can be a problem

Thanks for your responce.

How many miles do you have ? There's a 100,000 mile warranty on your factory cats.

Even if your over the mileage, -scrap yard will purchase your old cats. Some have actually made money removing factory cats and installing 2 High Flows.
