'04 screw 4x4 roaring from rear tires

Just bought this truck exactly one week ago

Noticed the roar during test drive, chalked it up to road noise from my all terrains.

Took it to my alignment guy today, he put a jack under the rear differential, lifted both rear tires, then had his helper put it in gear and run the truck about 20MPH. He then asked me to feel the jack handle, and the "grinding" was quite noticable.

I'm a pretty experienced mechanic, but I've never messed with axles before. I'm sure the issue is with an axle bearing gone out somewhere, but where do I start? Any specialized tools required?

Would you guys be worried about my planned 400 mile roundtrip to San Antonio?

Figured I'd go ahead and replace the bearings. Shouldnt be too hard of a job, just need to borrow a couple tools from the parts house.

Could anything else in the rear axle cause a roar besides bearings? What else should I be checking for while I'm in there?

I found that writeup, and it helped me out a lot. However, It doesnt mention anything regarding the carrier bearings or the pinion bearing..

Replacing simply the rear wheel bearings had no affect on the noise.
