removing plastic gas cup?

hey im not sure what the correct term is for the plastic cup that surrounds the gas cap. Anyways the paint is peeling around it (as i understand it is a fairly common problem). It looks like the plastic is rubbing the paint off. I have some rubber type stuff from work we use to protect gas pipes from getting the paint scratched off and would like to put it under the plastic to protect the paint. How can i remove the plastic cup? i see there are three bolts... can it just be pulled out after that? Thanks!

I think you're speaking of the gas door hinge. You unscrew the 3 screws from the gas tank pipe and it will come out along with the gas door. The gas door can be removed from the hinge.
