Paint to Black Handle Bucket Covers (pics)

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd post up some pics of my paint to black progress. Like many here I decided to paint my trim bits black with Fusion Spraypaint to get rid of the graying out. I'm really happy with the results so far considering I'm a rattle can novice and didn't know if I'd be able to pull it off.

Special thanks to StoveTop for his thread on Painted to Black door handle bucket covers. Personally I love the way they look on my truck, though I know some chrome haters gonna hate. I've also painted my bedrails and tailgate rail black so far too. Next is the wiper cowl and mirrors. The mirrors scare me the most, because I don't plan on removing them.

Sorry for the really bad pictures. I took 'em with my iPhone.

Anyway...

Before

After

Next on the agenda is a leveling kit (waiting on Bilstein), new wheels, and some BFG 33's.

Wow, no comments huh? Must be a case of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say it at all." lol

looks good bro, not a huge fan of the chrome, but if you're happy with it that's all that matters

looks good. im a fan of those handles though. the mark handles look much classier and not a cheesy as the whole chrome handle. amazing though how much those black plastic pieces fade though. a little paint makes 1000% difference.

They look alright, I would just go ahead and get LT Handles.

Great job and thanks for the props.
As for the haters, it's your truck and do what you think looks good.

I thought about it, but I came to the conclusion that I wasn't sure I'd like them enough and the money was better spent elsewhere. I've not seen the Mark LT handles in person... it is really so noticeable that these are covers without actually getting up close and looking? I wouldn't think so, which is why I did it this way. I can always take these off anytime I want, and I've read that changing the entire handle assembly is kind of a pain.

In any case, I'm not worried about the 'haters' or anything. Everyone has an opinion, I was just curious as to what people thought and figured I might give a few pictures of these done on a red truck for a change. I plan on getting black rims with a polished lip, so some of the chrome on the truck will be going away. I hadn't planned on doing this until after my rims came in, but I had to do something to my truck while I was waiting. Can't stand not doing something. lol

The painting black came out good. The deal with the handles IMO isn't that they're the cheaper ones. What I see is you have a clash of red, chrome and black altogether in one spot. It'll look better all black where you only have two colors or do like I did and leave the handle chrome, but paint theouter shell red. Also painting the mirror caps red would help to bring them out. I got my entire mirror painted because I have the chrome caps. If I where to have left them black then that would be 3 different colors in one place clashing. IMO you either do chrome or black, but not to much chrome.

*snip*l
You can tell because you left the bucket black. If you would have PTMed them, it'd be a lot harder to tell. I would have just painted all the handle/bucket red, then just covering the handle with the chrome piece. As for the mirror, PTM the cap.

Also, not sure how the black/chrome lip wheels might look. Give me some wheels, and I'll PS them on real quick (when I get home). In the end, though, it's your truck

I understand about the colors clashing, but I disagree personally. I'm not a big fan of any of the painted to match handles I've seen, no matter what the colors. Just a personal preference. I will say that the pictures really bring out the color difference in a way that seeing it in person doesn't do... in person it's not nearly so stark. Since I've already got chrome on the truck with the bumpers and grille surround, I decided to go Red/Black/Chrome with the overall theme. I'm not a huge fan of red, so I don't want to add any more red to it anyway. (And before you ask why I bought a Red truck, it's because I got a great deal on this one at a time when I needed a vehicle, and it was the only F150 SuperCrew in the area in my price range).

The wheels are the same way. To be honest, I find black wheels pretty boring if they're just straight black, no matter what the design. It may be that the wheels I'm getting will clash with the rest of the truck, but they're the only wheels I've seen that I actually would want to put on my truck unless I'm willing to spend double the cash... which I'm not, or if I willing to follow the herd and get Rockstars or Monsters... which I'm not. Nothing against you guys with them because they look great, but I just want something I haven't seen anywhere.

Here's the wheels I'm planning on just for fun. Ultra Rogue Black.

I like 'em. I'm usually not a big chrome guy, but I think leaving the buckets black and levers chrome looks good on your truck. The darker red and the window tint draws it all together.

I think once you put the wheels on it'll change the overall apperance of the truck. I agree with you on the all black. I prefer black/machine. After the wheels are on you can change other things that you may or may not like. And my number one reason I got my stuff painted was b/c I was tired of the wax getting in the all the plastic then I'd have to scrub it off.

i think it looks good! yes black and chrome and the color of your truck "clash" but its a good, subtle "clash" and it looks great! it'll look even better leveled out with some bigger tires.
