Final answer on rear shudder

05 fx4 screw, i just had the rear end axle bearings(because of howl) done. They and they said the pinoin was good. I just bought the truck so i dont know whats normal, ive done alot of searching but cant get a definitive on this.
is a slight shudder/vibration normal while turning on pavement at a slow speed normal? He replaced the rear diff fluid and he forgot the friction additive ( i mentioned it, then watched him put 130mls in), Id like to think if the clutch packs were gone he would have noticed. people say its normal and some say clutch packs, what gives i just dropped $1200 on the repair? are there tests i can do?

Give the friction modifier some time to work in.

No,it is not normal to have a shudder. That happens when you don't have enough friction modifier. But like glc said, give it a little time first. I'd take it back to the mechanic who did the work if it doesn't stop. It's his problem, not yours!

I recently had the fluid changed in the diff. It felt like it took a few days of driving for the FM to work in.

Tbaz......If you just spent 1200 bucks on diff repair then how come there wasn't friction modifier in there?

Sounds like a return trip is needed. Plus if you put new cluthces in there they should be soaked first. Sounds like some body blew it!

no new clutches, just new axle bearings, i'll give it some time to work in, maybe i'll add another bottle if i can figure how to drain some fluid without putting a new seal. its a real small vibration and real short on the beginning of the turn

Take a piece of plastic hose about 18" long, carefully put it in thru the fill plug. Then hold your thumb over the end and pull it part way out and hold it lower than the fill hole and remove your thumb. This should start a syphon and you can drain the required amount out. Add the modifier and top it off.

Sounds real easy when you say it real fast!

my 2 cents, are to just leave it, mine shudders and i love it. the clutch packs are nice and grabby (is that a word?) and when i drive in snow/mud, it just means that im going to have that much more traction with both rear wheels spinning.

if you make the clutch packs too frictionless you may as well just take out the packs and make it an open diff.
