Help on purchasing a 2004 f150

There is a 2004 ford f150 supercrew 4WD for sale. The guy is asking $8,500 because it has 166k miles, other than that the truck is mint. Now i could go with that or my grandpa's truck which is a 2002 ford f150 super cab 2WD with 78k miles for $5,000. He took really good care of it, no rust or anything and he even put the 93 gas in it. But i really like the new body styles and the idea the 2004 is a 4WD. Any suggestions?

Is it a 5.4L motor? If so, make sure the plugs have been changed.

I'd go with the 2002. With the mileage difference, price difference, and especially knowing who owned it and how it was taken care of. It would be a no brainer for me.

I agree with you though, I like the 04 style better than the previous generation but I am a little bias too. However, if you look around on this site you will find some bad *** lookin' trucks in that generation. Take the 3k difference and invest it in some wheels and tires and maybe a few other mods. They're damn fine lookin' trucks.

Good Luck

I would take the 02...you can always trade up in a few years if you want to....

I too like the 04-08 bodystyle better. I bought mine at 22 used and didn't know the previous owner. I know the front skid plate on mine def took a good sized rock given the indentation and bending in it.

Its always nice to know where the vehicle comes from and how it was taken care of.

Go with the 02'. Save your money for when something breaks.

definitely the 02. the mileage difference is pretty substantial which is a big deciding factor to me. 4wd is nice to have, but not if its broke in the driveway.

theres also something to be said about buying from people you know. If you know your grandpa has taken care of it, its a safer bet. Also, if something does go wrong or something unusual happens, he's the first person I'd ask. Chances are he'll have an idea about it. If your grandpa is like mine was, He'll even help you fix it if you supply the "adult beverages" ha. try getting a previous owner on the phone about a vehicle, its not that easy in alot of cases...

also, not to put anyone with a SCREW down, but I love having my supercab... I love the little bit longer bed, and on occasion having the ability to carry a few more people if needed. but to each his own, some people carry passengers more than others, and some don't carry them at all.

The way I see it, you have no clue what that truck has gone thru in the last 166,000 miles but it's going to be tired. Expect a rebuild and soon. You'll probably also start seeing accessories like starter, alternator, O2 sensors, cats, etc, start going bad not to mention transmission. While the guy kept the truck clean, he may not have been so good at maintenance. I had a brother in law like that. His trucks always looked like new but he drove them into the ground and he had no clue about maintenance. Grand dads truck you know the history and probably what the truck has seen. I'd also bet grand dad would love to see you in his truck. Probably, unknowing to you, it comes with a family warranty too. Another vote for grand dads truck.

The first year of a major change usually has some issues. The 04 truck itself was very successful, but the 5.4 3V had its share of issues. The 02 was the 6th year of the OBS and the 4.6 was pretty much the same engine since it was introduced in 1991. The only major issue is proper spark plug torque to prevent blowout. The 5.4 3V has the plug breakage issue and the finicky cam phaser system.

I think you made a wise choice. If you really want a NBS Screw, wait a few years and pick up a used late 08 when the prices drop. Those 5.4's had redesigned heads and phasers.
