Transmission Fluid flowing into transfer case? Help!!
Transmission Fluid flowing into transfer case? Help!!
I have an 06 screw 4x4 with 73k miles. Got an oil change yesterday and buddy noticed that thre transfer case fluid level was WAY up above the level hole and that the tranny dipstick was almost dry. He said there is a leak between the transmission and the transfer case and all the fuils was flowing into the transfer case.
. The truck shifts perfct, there are no leaks on any of housings. The 4x4 works great. Drove home 53 mile truck shifting smooth as silk. He said he has seen this lots on "these Fords".
Anybody have any ideas??

I had an early Toyota did the same thing. When the t/c and trans are "mated" there is a seal between the two to keep each unit's fluid where it belongs.
Probably have to split the two and replace the seal. While you are in there check the breathers on both trans and t/c. The trans heats up more than the t/c and if the breather is plugged then it will build pressure and push the fluid into the transfer case.
Fix it soon or you may be doing a trans re-build soon.

Thanks. I am going to get it fixed in the next few days. I assume there is a seal that has been breached. I was wondering if anybody else has seen this on their Ford so I know what to expect for labour and seal (s). Good point on the breather tube. I will ask about that when I find the guy who is going to do the work for me.
I had a bad double lip seal between the tranny and tc. Buddy said it looked like it had been apart before. I bought the truck used so he is prob right. The Ford places who even had a clue what it might be said the same . 500 bucks plus flush etc for a total cost of nearly 1,000. My local Aamco guy said you don't need to flush it as the fluid can't get back into the tranny. Total cost for the seal, labor new TC fluid and tranny oil was 350 bucks and in his shop for 4 hrs.
I had the same problem twice on my truck. The first time I fixed it myself and the second time I took it to a trans. shop. The guy that I took it to is a family friend and he told me that he has seen this many times. He told me that there needed to be a ground put on the transmition because they build up static and the static and heat is causing the seal to harden. I did look at the seal that I put in the first time after he changed it and it was hardened. This may be all a bunch of crap but he put the ground strap on for like $10 and the seal has been good so far and that has been about 25-30,000 miles (knock on wood).
