Believe me, I worked three forums hard before I felt confident to dig into my trucks IWE system. After the homework the repairs were easy though.

I hate paying labor charges for stuff I can do myself. Duh, why these forums exist.

The repairs are easy for an average backyard mechanic. Solenoid runs about $23, IWEs are about $75 each.
Thanks 60DRB for all that free pics and info this is going to help a lot.

i still hear clapping of the disc's in the IWE once in a while. maybe ill change the solenoid to the updated version with the hood on it. i couldnt find any air leaks but i also did not check it while driving down the road.

I never got to the "on road" testing myself. I did end up replacing the solenoid with the new type after replacing both IWEs. I guess the original solenoid is what caused the IWEs to go bad on my truck. It lived "up north" with the first owner, so likely went through some water/freezing events. It's been several months since I did the repairs and no problems whatsoever. I use the 4 wheel drive a couple times a month.
