Purchasing Help

Hi, I am new to this board, and have never owned a Ford truck before, but I am definetly considering it. Would like some info concerning pricing and model selection. I am interested in a F-150 4x4 5.4 8cyl s-crew or ext.cab, preferably a s-crew 05-08 under 100,000 miles. I've been checking prices and they are pretty much up there when factoring in 4x4. I've been watching a 2008 4x4 8cl 5.4 xlt 40,000miles with leather interior in Florida, asking price $23,442. I am willing to at least purchase something 20,000 max. Do you guys think this 08 can be bought for this price, or continue looking at other models/price. Just a little confused, as this might be my first Ford purchase, any info will be appreciated.

I bought my 07 FX4 with black leather luxury interior in aug 09. it had 50k miles at the time. paid in the neighborhood of 23k for it. truck came from arizona though. underbody and frame were in excellent condition, like it had rolled out of the factory. interior was in the same condition. had ALL the options i wanted, brand new tires. its all about particular trucks.... i'm willing to pay a little more for certain trucks, you can tell if they were cared for. also my truck had all the maintenance records in the glove box. every little warranty claim and oil change was there.

its all about what you want, what condition its in, and how bad you want it.

can't go wrong with these trucks though... with a few simple mods, you can change the look of it drastically. the best part is, they look amazing just leaving it stock.

good luck in your search.

I just bought a 07 Screw 4x4 Lariat 3 weeks ago. Paid around $22k with 80,000 miles. Trucks have really gone up in price. I bought a 03 Diesel King Ranch F250 Crew. Paid $16,500. Could have sold in the last month or two for $19-$20k. Crazy prices.

If you can, buy a late 08, it will have the redesigned heads and cam phasers. The way to ID it is the color of the COP boots, the old design has black boots and the new design has brown boots. The other option is buy a 4.6.

If you don't mind me asking, what are cop boots? Looks like there isn't much wiggle room in that 08 s-crew pricing. Always thought that the 5.4 would have been better than the 4.6. You know, go big or don't go at all mentality. I sat in an fx2 ext cab the other day and was impressed with the legroom in the back. The only thing I have agaisnt ext cabs, is opening my door to let someone in the back out. Thanks again guys.

COP = Coil On Plug. There's no distributor or coil pack, each spark plug has a coil on top of it.

The 04 through mid 08 5.4's have issues with the cam phasers and spark plugs. They were both taken care of with the head redesign. The 05's also had fuel injector issues. Take a look around this forum and the V-8 engine forum to educate yourself on these issues. There are many many satisfied owners, but I personally wouldn't own one due to these issues. I'd take a 4.6 or a later model 5.4, thank you.

Have you tried looking for a good used 09 yet? There were a lot of improvements - upgraded engines, 6 speed transmission, and a lot of other stuff.

Thanks for the info on the c.o.p's. Sounds as if no matter what you buy these days, they all seem to have a problem. Have seen some 09's on the web but, the price was kind of high. Will continue looking and educating myself on these trucks/engines.

I wouldn't get TOO worked up about the COP/plug issue -- as time moves along and mechanics learn better how to deal with the issue, the difficulty dealerships have in getting the plugs removed properly becomes less of a concern. If you see a nice clean truck that has been well maintained, but isn't one with the redesigned heads, I still wouldn't hesitate to go for it.....
