Peeling paint - wtf??

I have a 2007 XL that I bought used last August. Recently I posted about peeling clearcoat on the passenger side pocket door. I took it to the dealer, and they determined it wasn't the original paint (factory paint, according to them, doesn't have a separate clearcoat layer).

Now, on the driver's side, I discovered by accident that the paint is flaking off the panel below the door. I'm pretty sure that's still the factory paint.

The warranty, of course, was up in March.

This pisses me off - I guess I'm going to have to get the whole thing resprayed before it's over.

If they wrote a ticket up the first time you brought it in, I'd take it back to them and reference the ticket in warranty. See what happens.

I have the same problem, I had a couple really small dents on my tail gate and the paint is all peeling off it now in a bunch of spots and also all around my gas cap the paint is peeling back, its really pissing me off.

My Dearborn-built 06 clear coat is peeling on the back along right under the tailgate lip and under the left tail light, both along ridges. Dealer says it's been resprayed. Real body shops say they see no evidence that it's been repainted, and I don't either.

It's barely noticeable now, but at some point it will have to be fixed. I fully believe it's a Ford problem, after all Ford doesn't exactly have a reputation or history of quality with these trucks. But I have no way to prove it, and since it's not actually corrosion it isn't covered anyway.

What utter duffuses. ALL vehicles are clear coated anymore, and have been for a while. Even whites and blacks are clear coated. It's easy to tell if you have clear coat on the whole vehicle and also easy to ask at a paint (auto) store because their books tell you if it uses clear coat or not. The clear coat is ALWAYS separate from the color. Use some rubbing (or better, polishing compound) on it and see if you get any color on the rag. No color- it's clear coated, color on the rag, single stage, not clear coated.

You bought it used... I am pretty sure that it has been re-painted.

Since when does used=repainted?
This is a legitimate complaint. Many trucks and cars over the years have had very serious paint issues. Who hasn't seen vehicles with sheets/strips of missing paint on them? It starts small, then years later we hear "yeah, brand X had a bad batch of paint back in 200x". My previous F150 had lots of paint flaking/shedding before it was 7 years old and it was never repainted (I bought it new). Those areas were clean galvenized metal when the paint shed. Ford said, "Too bad it didn't start while it was under warantee. We've seen a lot of this."

Wow, guess this is something i will have to keep an eye out for, ive got a chip of paint about the size of a pencil eraser missing on my pass. door where someone nicked it, hopefully it doesn't spread and cause the surrounding clear coat to fail, probably going to look into getting it repaired before it does
I don't think anything can compare to the utter crap Dodge was using in the early to mid 90's just about all dodge trucks i see from that era have burnt or missing clear coat
my dad had a 95 2500 and was pressure washing it one time and the clear coat was coming off in SHEETS, good thing its just a POS plow truck

What we are unhappy about isn't from follow-on damage started by a chip or other identifiable damage (PRESSURE WASHER!?!?!?!?). The "bad paint issue" is when the paint either bubbles/blisters and sheds, or just starts coming off in patches or strips. Mine was on a '92 with blue metalic paint (started at about 6-7 years old), and by the time the truck was destroyed in an accident (18 years old), most of the hood and front fenders were bare galvenized metal. At least the galvenized metal never rusted.

Lots of 30-70 year old vehicles still sport their original paint...
