removing chrome shifter trim

I want to know how to remove the chrome shifter trim. It blinds me while I'm driving and I don't like the chrome anyways. I know how to pull the cup holder and I was able to get the chrome piece free, but I can't get it out because the shifter is in thee way and too big.

I want to paint it. Has anyone done this?? How difficult is it??

I have a 2007 FX4 with center consol type shifter.

Thanks

Well don't try it till someone with some knowledge chimes in, BC I pulled the cap on mine and the little tabs are now broken. To boot there is nothing under there to remove in order to get the shift lever off.

I hope someone out there know how to do this...my chromes all scratched up.

Hey If I paint mine you wanna trade? I've got an 05' if they are the same.

The plastic on mine is scratched too. I went to a local sign shop and got somee vinyl to put on it. The vinyl looks ok. but it wa hard to cut the inside, around the shifter. Paint would look better in my opinion.

After looking at everything... I'm thinking that it's going to be mroe trouble than it's worth, but I figured I'd ask anyways.
