Question Painting headlights - painting procedure?

I've wanted to go out and buy FX2 gray headlights for a long time but then I heard about painting them. I went out and got Ford Duplicolor dark shadow gray today. I will probably need to prep the surface, or should I just spray it black with Fusion plastic paint first then put the gray over it? I think the gray will stick to the Fusion alot better than the fake chrome plastic. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

I did mine last week weekend, I used 400 grit sand paper to scuff the chrome part, just to make sure it would stick good. I used the satin black from Krylon. Turned out great. Just make sure you use a ton of sealant on them when your done to make sure they are water tight. I used the black gasket sealant. I think I used 2 tubes per light. I put the together with the sealant, let it dry over night then went over the outside with even more. They are not pretty to look at but all that is hidden under the hood. TAKE YOUR TIME TAKEN APART.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot about the sealant part, I'll have to go get some as well as the 400 grit sandpaper. Did you use Krylon Fusion or just regular Krylon brand paint?

I used the Krylon Fusion, worked great. I know you are trying to go gray, so I would use the fusion, then the gray.

I used the OEM trim paint and it came out great:

I also used black gasket sealant, I think about 3 tubes and then strapped them for 24 hours like this so they keep a good seat in the sealant:
