Unhappy Tech question, round 2: whining

I figure this is the safest non-biased place to find some comfort. I have an 05 FX4 that's stock (I know....the shame of stock) that has developed a whine coming from the transmission that pretty much went away between 45 and 50. Initially, I thought it was a bearing in the trans until I was on the freeway last weekend, gave it some gas, got a horrendus whine then went away...when the torque converter locked up again. Ok, so now my guess is it needs a new torque converter. I can deal with that. Timing is the issue here, tho. In a couple days I'm hitting the road to move from FL to AZ across I-10. The trip is pretty much flat and I'm not towing anything. Is this something I need to be concerned about now or be nice to it and take care of it in 2k miles when I'll be able to get a really good discount on parts and labor?

Thanks for your help
