Question about OEM window "tint"

I've got an 05 FX4 with what I believe is the OEM heat resistant glass option. It's basically a very light tint on the glass I believe. Last winter I was cleaning my passenger side window with Stoner's and the tint started disintegrating in the middle of the window. I'm looking to get my windows tinted to match the rears, but was wondering if most shops just go right over the old OEM tint or do they remove it? I'll have to pull the old tint it seems to get rid of the blemish, which means I'll have to remove both sides so it'll look even. Thoughts?

most shops will remove it....will cost about $50 or so depending on whats on it....if the stock tint you are referring to is on the front windows then it is not stock. Only the rear windows come tinted and shouldnt be flaking off. Its in the glass itself which is tinted.

The stock window tint is 18%....15% in the front should match the back almost perfectly given the difference in window size.

I would remove old tint if it is flaking...the new stuff wont stick well to it and you will end up redoing it anyway. Taking window tint off is a pain in the ***, I would leave it to the pro shop to mess with it.

did you buy the truck used?? im surprised to hear the oem tint is flaking from stoners (which from my understanding is tint safe), the oem tint should be pretty dark IMO (18% as stated above) too which leads me to believe it was done after the truck was bought....never really heard of oem tint flaking off unless the owner used an ammonia based cleaner....

yeah oem tint is only on the rears...and its dyed into the glass. ive heard using a black plastic bag with ammonia on the window and leaving it in the sun for a while then itll come off much easier.

yep, i bought the truck used. the tint on the front windows is so unbelieveably light that i can't imagine somone paying money to have them tinted that shade. i can clearly see a seam at the top edge of the window so it has to be a film. i thought it might be part of the "heat reflective glass" option.

Lightbulb Window Tint

I agree that since the old tint is already starting to wear off, It must be removed first before applying a new one. But then removing and putting on tint is really complicated, I'd suggest you leave it to the pro. You may check out www.TintBuyer.com. I always consult with them for my tinting needs. The provide infos about window tints such as its types, quotations, tint limits in every state and will even help you locate the best professional tinter near your area.
