2004 5.4 Spark Plugs Progress

Well today I decided I might as well change the plugs instead of worrying about them everytime I look at the truck. So I had already gotten all the plugs and Motorcraft cleaner and memorized the TSB so I went ahead. Cylinder 1 broke, Cylinder 2 came out, Cylinder 3 broke, I skipped cylinder 4, and cylinder 5 broke when i tried to use my 18 volt dewalt impact. Now ive just loosened the rest of them and they are soaking with cleaner. Anyway, just thought i would share my experience. and the engine was cold..

Sorry to hear it happened to you. How many miles do you have on the truck?

Around 86,000 miles, or 138,000 kms. They were still factory original plugs.

You guys must have a softer touch and more confidence than me, because I wouldn't even try to change the spark plugs myself on that truck model. Way too many horror stories!

I feel for ya....

Question I have is why were you changing the plugs at only 86,000 miles?
They should be good for at least 120,000 miles.

Even though my truck has the newer plug design, I dont intend to replace my plugs until I have too.
I replace thjem on my 97 with 131,000, only because a coil pack went out. Turns out the plugs still looked good.

Having mine done next week. Not looking forward to it. Sitting at 105,000 hard working miles on stock plugs.

Well your right, they are good for 100k but at 86k it means the plugs are already 86% done, so why wait and increase the chance of more of them breaking? I decided to change them myself because the Ford dealer wanted around 600 plus 100 for every broken plug.

Same here, I changed mine at 129k on my 2003 because coil 4 went out, and I figured if I was going to have to deal with all of that anyways, I might as well do the spark plugs the same day.

the majority of us with the 04 to 07 that know about the broken plug issues just try to stay ahead of the game. i'd rather replace them early and hopefully not break any. there have been occasions where the head has to be pulled to get the broken part out.(not cheap) i was lucky changed them myself with none broken. i was'nt losing sleep over it but it was on my mind.

Sorry about you luck

I hate to hear the stories about broken plugs... I also did mine at at 45,000 just to be ahead of the game. I ran a can of seafoam in the tank prior, even dropped some down the vacuum line to help loosen up some of the carbon on the plugs. I did mine on a Sunday, took me all day; 3 beers and 2 football games and a dinner later I was able to remove them all out without breakage.
I believe its a **** pour design but I love my truck and we'll just have to put up with the issue. I will more than likely change them out again before 100,00 miles and do the job myself, again!
Best of luck...
