When should you replace the timing chain and related components?

How common is this problem? I have a small rattle at cold start. Just bought a 07 5.4 with 84000 miles.

The dealership that done my work says it was not all that common. But he said it was the 4th or 5th truck that he had done (with the same problem) in a matter of months. My opinion is propably the '04-'05 are the most problematic.
I love my truck, but this is the only vehicle I've ever owned that would rattle on startup. I had my truck fixed almost 2 months ago, and there was no rattle at all on startup, but now its started the slight rattle at startup. It can sit for 2 or 3 days and it may not rattle at all on start up. Sometimes it can sit overnight and rattle at start up................just dosen't make sense to me.

I had a 05 with the 5.4 that I bought new and sold with 19,000 miles. It rattled from day one, and my dads does the same thing. His is also an 05. He bought his with 40,000 and now has around 70,000. Mine really sounded bad, kind of like a diesel. And not at just start up. I have the option of buying a extended warranty through a company called Route 66 through my credit union. I had it on my 06 Exploader that I traded in and also on my wife's Acura TL. They replaced a coolant temp sensor, thermostat, and half of a battery at no cost to me. Paid all parts and labor no deductible. With what I heard here I just may buy it again.
