Spinning/Whirring noise

Ok everybody, hopefully someone here has had this issue and can give me a clue to where the dealership should start looking. On acceleration my truck gets a whirring/spinning noise from about 30-50mph, not real loud (if the radio was on I wouldnt notice) that seems to come from the front of the truck(trans, transfer, front end or something). Also when the truck shifts into OD it seems to dissapear or at least quite down enough that I cannot hear it. This noise is present whether in four wheel drive or not, and it may be there from 0-30 as well it could just be quite enough I dont hear it. Truck info is listed in sig. I know this is not a lot of info but maybe this issue will jump out at someone who has had as simialr experience.

is it speed dependant or RPM dependant? i should say, can you sit either in park/neutral, rev it up and it makes the same noise, or do you have to be moving?

It is speed dependent, I cannot rev it up and get the noise I have to be moving. The whirring/spinning noise becomes more pronounced with speed all the way up to shifting into OD and then either goes away or gets real quite. Also there is no change in the pitch of the noise when the trans shifts through the gears leading up to OD, the noise just gets louder from 30mph to 50mph. And again just to have a clear discription this is not a very loud noise even at its loudest, if the radio is on or the heat is on the third notch you would never hear it.

Yeah mine does that to. I thought it might me the torque convertor locking up. But I don't know that much about that stuff. So thats just my guess.

Well, it might be something with the converter but I am sure that mine did not make this noise until about a week ago. I am stopping by the dealership again after work today so their transmission guy can listen to it. I just hope they can figure out what it is and dont just start guessing and replacing parts.

And the Winner is..............#9 Thrust bearing in the trans. Crap.... They have to take my trans apart. But on a good note as soon as the trans guy listened to it he know exatly what it was.

Seems common with this truck, I have replaced a few bearings, and have had to do a few overhauls due to metal contamination. Its a good thing you caught early.

bwill11- Since you are a ford tech, anything I need to worry about when i get it back as far as longevity? Or when they put it back together is it usually as good as new? Guess I wont need to change the trans fluid for a while..............

CRAP!!! I just started hearing the same thing today exactly as you described it. With an expired extended warranty and impending unemployment I'm really not digging this. BWILL11, would a trans flush help buy me some time or just a waste at this point?
