coil overs are used to add more spring to the truck, usually for load carrying, sometimes for leveling.

My gripe is the shock is there to dampen the leaf spring, to stop the oscillation, etc, and by wrapping a spring around the shock it defeats the purpose of the shock.

I have Progressive 440's on my Electraglide, and the stock shocks on my rice bike are coil over shock, but those are designed to be that way, coil over shocks for leveling/added capacity just make for a crappy ride if you ask me. Then there is the issue of using the shock mounting points to carry load.
