Drivers door wont latch when cold!!!

For the third time this year when the temp was below 20 I opened my door, got in, and as I closed the doorit would not latch shut!!!

I tired like 100 times and really slammed it and nothing...
locked, unlocked and pulled the handle inside another hundred times...
after 15 minutes and once my truck was warmer I got out and slammed the door shut and it latched...

anyone ever have this issue and/or hear of such a thing???

my truck must hate winter like I do...
-belt tension pullley was replaced due to noise when below 20
-remote start would not work when below 20...finally fixed after 4 attempts!!!

First take some silicon spray and apply it. Then let it dry. This will help get rid of the moisture.
Next spray some white lithium grease.
This will help protect the latch from moisture.
Wipe off any excess.

Thanks guys...

about the remote start...
The FORD dealer thought I was smokin crak when I told them it wasn't working...
I had to drop it off on a morning it was -10 out and then leave it there for the day
they called to tell me it didn't start...and it would be fixed a.s.a.p.

OR, he could try banging it about 100 more times then just secure it shut with a bungy cord.

Truth be told, I'd rather be a birdbrain then a jackass.

Let me ask you this sparky, just how many times do you have to bang the door before you clue in to the fact something's wrong? At what point do you stop, actually look at it and try to determine why it won't latch?

The fact that it would latch once the interior warmed up should have shown you that the cold was the problem. This should have also shown you that lubrication of some sort is in order. Even a shot of WD40 would have temporarily solved the problem.

I hope you plan on keeping your F150 until it dies. With the way you seem to maintain a vehicle, the next person to own it is in for a world of problems.

Hey Tweety

sorry I din't get back to you sooner
I was at Home Depot picking up some extra strong bungee cords and a gallon of
WD40 (this is like glue right???)
to hold the door closed because it is cold out and I want to keep the door shut...

I figure it is not worth looking into the problem because spring is just around the corner
bringing warmer weather and no more latch problems...

Thanks again for your help...I look foreward to reading more of your advice...

im sure he didn't slam his door 100 times and if your door wouldn't shut the first time i'm sure you would try again. yesterday my hood didn't latch the first time i pushed it down but i didn't just leave it alone i pushed down on it again and it shut. what if your door wouldn't open? would you keep trying to open it? mine froze shut a couple weeks ago and i pulled on it about 5 more times and it opened right up.

Good stuff! Glad I could help.

One thing I'm learning about you is you look for the easiest way to fix a problem. This explains why my bungee cord idea was so appealing to you.

Good news about the warmer weather coming. That means your problem is fixed until the cold stuff returns. Why bother fixing the problem when there's an easier way out of it right?

I'm looking forward to this thread reappearing at the end of the year when the cold weather comes back.

BTW, WD40 isn't glue. It'll L-U-B-R-I-C-A-T-E the latch so it won't stick anymore.

Wow, Tbird. You really do seem like the jackass in this post. The guy asked a question, its just that simple. My door has done this as well to me when its cold. You know what works to close it so you can get to wherever you were going? SLAMMING it a few times. Once I had time I went back and sprayed it.

Give the guy a break and if you think he's an idiot for the post then **** and leave it alone.

I see this alot where someone who lives on the Forum gives grief to people who ask questions. They just automatically assume that everyone needs to read every post back for like 4 years and that everyone has mechanical knowledge. The reason 80% of us found this forum is that we had questions/problems. Some of us have time to read alot of post and others dont. So when people have problems just try to help without so much grief. That's what we're all here for!

If he actually believes everything he reads he has way more problems to worry about...
I figured I would keep posting stupid remarks to string him along...and he bought it!!!
I guess when you live in Canada ther is "NOTHING" to do in the winter...
just the fact he believed I though WD-40 was glue says it all!!!...lol...
I have been a certified Tool & Die maker for over 10 years and I am only 34yo...
I run machines that cost more than my house and have built tooling that was over $100,000...with tolerances less than .005"...that's 5 thousands of an inch
(about a human hair)
also...I did all the work on my truck including exhaust, 3" lift and CAI...
not to mention I rebuilt my 92 5.0 stang from the ground up...all new...
4 wheel disc brakes, steering, suspension, trans/clutch, rearend, full exhaust w/headers
ignition and 8 speaker 600 watt sony xplode stereo system...

but I guess I deserve to get my ***** busted for slamming my door a few times
at 6:15 am in the dark when it was about 13 above 0 and trying to get to work...

my Bad...
