Can't go wrong with using Motorcraft.

I bought a new filter a few days ago. Dont have very much clearance in the garage and so could only jack up about 5 to 6 inches. Depressurized the system and couldnt for the life of me get enough room to get at the old filter. Snowed like crazy here and since I was doing a little preventitive maintenance, I will just wait a bit and move out to the driveway where I can put it up a little higher. Sounds like a good excuse to put a lift on the truck, let's see if the wife buys it!

Just changed mine today - Super easy.
Bought a Wix filter from the local parts guys.
Get the little fuel fitting tool (small scissors type) works like a charm.

A word of caution...! Parts guys told me "you don't need the tool because the Wix filters come with new clips... just pry out the old clips and if they break replace them.) BAD ADVICE!
The clips in the box don't look anything like the clip on the tank side, and the engine side doesn't have a clip at all.

Ok - fuel filter replaced! Nothing broken and I owe that to ManualF150 for showing up with filter replacement thread. Thanks! I have neglected that piece of maintenance and am at 114,000 miles - bought it new, so I was expecting a nasty black syrupy sludge to come out based on the posts I have read. Much to my surprise, the stuff coming out wasnt clean by any means but wasnt as bad as I imagined it would be. Started her up and the idle was dang near perfect. I had also cleaned the MAF sensor as well so I am not sure if it was all clean filter or a little of both. Anyways, thanks again for saving me some money. I did it for about $15 versus the cheapest was Jiffy Lube at $60.

Just curious why you wouldn't use a Motorcraft.

You don't need to jack the truck up at all. Just crawl under it.

could this filter be the culprit of bad MPG's?

The filter should cause bad mpg's, but it could cause poor performance due to being clogged. I changed my fuel filter at 40K miles to a Wix filter and noticed no change (I wasn't having any problems to begin with). I cut open the old filter and everything looked pretty clean.
