Bigger Tires with 3.31 regular axle?
Bigger Tires with 3.31 regular axle?
I'm looking into 2" level and 285/70/17 for a better look on my 07 4X2 Supercab STX with the 5.4 and 3.31 regular axle. I don't do any major towing and mostly use the truck driving to/from work. Is this too much tire for the 3.31? Would I need to regear....or get a tuner? Any suggestions?

They had a 3.31 option? I thought 3.55 was the lowest, but that may have just been the lowest for LS rear ends. I would imagine you'd be fine with those tires, that isn't quite a 33" tire right? A tuner will always help, but no need to regear unless you just want to go to a 4.10 or so.
Just bought it used from dealer. I was pleasantly suprised that the STX came in a 5.4. They are not easy to find, but I came across a couple while shopping.
The only way I can think of that an STX has a 5.4 is if somebody did a motor swap at some point in time.
I looked up the Window sticker with the VIN and it definitely was made as a 5.4 with 3.31 regular axle.

If you don't do much towing or hauling you will be fine.
I ran 31's with 3.08 gears in my 94 F150 with 300-6, 5spd, 4X4. I even towed 2-4000lbs a far amount of time with that setup. Heck I put over 100,000 miles on the truck like that. Then I swapped to 4.10's (with a locker in the rear and a posi up front) and 33's, it was a night and day difference. But if it wasn't for the fact that I started to use the truck for towing alot more than I was using it for a daily driver, I would have kept the 3.08s

I'm running near 33's on my 4.6 with the 3.31's. I use the truck like you and rarely haul anything super heavy. Pics are in my sig, leveled 2wd with 33's.
My friend also has an 07 same setup as mine, and he has over 50k on his with no complaints. He hauls and tows 4 wheelers to his deer lease year round which is about an 8 hour drive for him.
Nice truck by the way. Love that model/color combo.

I have 3:73's with 35's with no problems!! 325/60/20's = 35.35 x 12.80 x 20
I wouldn't go bigger then 33's with the 3:31's though...
32's are probably a good option which the 285/70/17's are just a little over that.
But should be ok. 285/70/17 = 32.71 x 11.22 x 17
Sorry for the pic size.

Im running 33s on my 4.2 v6 with 3.31 gears and no problem...there was one guy who ran 35s on 3.31 gears. I have had no problems on my v6 which is a 5-speed, with you having the 5.4 you shouldnt have any problem
