"Clunk" Sound when 4x4 engaged

Hello Everyone and Happy Holidays!

I did a search on this and only found grinding threads, not Clunk threads.

I have an 06 Mark LT 4x4 49K on the clock. When I engage 4 high, I hear and feel a "Clunk"
This happens while I am moving. Also if I am stopped and engage 4 high it
happens after I start to move. It last for a second and sounds/feels as if it
is coming from the transfer case.

Any ideas? I have 500 miles left on my 4 year/50k warranty, but thought I should be more educated by you, prior to going to the stealership.

Thanks and have a great holiday season! :santa:

That sounds pretty normal to me. Your transfer case and front diff have to lock in. The noise should not be excessive or last for any period of time, but if you hear one solid clunk when you go into 4x4 I would not be concerned.

Thanks for the quick response mdhawkin. My concern is that it has never made that noise before. I use 4x4 typically 7-8 times per year, when we travel to the mountains and have to drive in the snow. I usually will engage 4 hi once a month on dry roads (always going straight) just to keep things working properly

I would not be that concerned, but all I can say is for piece of mind take it to the dealer before your 500 miles are up.

Let me know what they determine. If it does turn out to have issues I would like to know what they are. Good luck

they tend to do this when getting older....mine does it as well and 66K on the clock. Louder "clunk" when switching to 4LO as transfer case locks into place.

My 07 has done this since day 1, but only going into 4 Low.

Dealer has looked at it twice & says there's nothing wrong, they even changed the fluid to check for metal shavings but everything was fine.

The only trouble I've had with my 4X4 is when a vacum sensor on the left front went out & kept trying to engage 4 High while the transfer case was in 2 High.

One hell of a rattling, knocking noise, but as soon as I would switched to 4 High it would stop, so atleast I could limp it to the dealer.

Luckily this happened on a friday afternoon, just before I was going to hook up my trailer & head for the hills for the weekend. Lee

I will follow up with what I said in my OP. You guys should not be over concerned. Assuming normal driving conditions are in play - no worries. Happy Holidays!

Any update as to what the dealer said? Im just curious, mine does it too... and given what has been said and how many others have it, Im not gonna worry myself to death over it, but I use my 4wd about once a week right now and turning 315s with 3.73s doesn't help with my piece of mind

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay in reply. I took it to the dealer, and they said that it
is normal and it is the sound of the transfer case engaging. I made sure that it is written in the record of my concern incase soemthig does go wrong later.

Happy New Year!

MC
