Thinking of selling my 04?

Just throwin around the idea right now, wont do anything until I get my job back ( stupid economy) But I was thinking about sellin my 04 f150 5.4 for a 99-02 7.3 superduty diesel or maybe a duramax or cummins. I want to start pulling a 24 foot travel trailer this summer and I want to get a sled deck and haul at least 2 sleds next winter.... what you guys think?

If you plan on pulling the trailer A LOT I say yea, make the move and go to a diesel. If you are just going to pull it every now and then, you could keep your F150 it will get the job done (assuming you have the 5.4).

Ive seen alot of people pulling huge trailers like that with F150's or smaller trucks but a 3/4 ton is probably better suited for the job. For some reason it always seems like Canadians doing it, but maybe thats just because the highway I drive the most goes up to Canada.
I saw a Nissan Pathfinder pulling a huge dual axle travel trailer over the summer as well as a few Dodge Dakotas doing the same.

If you go 3/4 ton go with a Dodge with a Cummins.

I like Ford trucks but you cant beat the Cummins diesel.

A 24' travel trailer is a small one and not a problem for a half ton. I've pulled a 25' one since my 04 was new.

i dont know how much sleds weight, so can't say much, but i just swapped to a 3/4 ton and love it.

saw a jeep liberty towing a huge *** camper the other day towing towards san antonio, it was swaying like hell going about 55 mph on the interstate and barely could keep a lane. the best part of it was, i inspected that liberty about a month prior and the guy was bragging about how he could tow his big trailer easily with it.

As long as you are staying on flat country, the F150 will tow a 24' TT just fine. I think my truck is rated to tow 6500lbs. If you plan to tow through hilly country, that's a different story. You'll wish you had the diesel for the mountains.
I towed a 25' TT from Raleigh NC to Orlando FL (600 miles) and back with a 302 V8 86 F150 short wheel base truck and it did fine. It had a 3.00 rear and a C6 3 speed automatic without lockup torque converter. It turned about 2400 rpm at 65mph as I remember which was at the top of its torque curve.

Just make sure you have sway control on the TT. I actually towed mine to FL and back without it at 65mph and I was an idiot. It was a two handed job to steer and I would cringe every time a tractor trailer would pass me and pull and push me all over the place. Afterwards I installed the Reese dual cam sway control and did not have any more sway problems. My reese equalizing hitch had the 1000 lb. bars. The dealer I bought it from recommended 750lb bars and said the 1000 lb bars would make the truck ride stiff. NOT!
