Best way to get rid of chrome on the ovals?

Since the deal didn't happen with the F350 that I wanted, the inner rockers were rusting very badly, so I guess that means its time to do a couple little things to the F150. One thing that I have been wanting to do for a while is to get rid of the chrome surround on the FX2 grille oval and especially the tail gate oval. What is the best way to do this?

Thats what I was thinking also. Take them off, take off the black/chrome overlays that I have right now, scuff the ovals up, paint them black, and then apply the new black/dsg overlays. I didn't know if someone else had a different way that they had done theirs.
