License Plate light Replacement

I've had my 2005 F150 now for a few years (bot it used) and I can't figure out how to replace the license plate lights. Is there some trick? do you have to take off the bumper?
Thanks,
Jim

I'm no expert, but I'm assuming there's some sort of assembly in the back of the bumper where you just pull it apart and take the bulb out. I highly doubt you'll have to remove your bumper.

You're probably looking for a black round'ish plasticy housing thing with a wire coming out. It'll probably have some tabbish dealy that you need to unclip.

Let's wait for someone who knows what they're talking about.

very easy to change. reach up behind the bumper in the area where the lights are, grab hold of the socket and twist. it'll pull right out. if you lie down under the bumper and look up, you'll see exactly what i mean.

Yep just reach back there and you will find the pigtail harness and follow it up to the bulb connector. Twist it out and then you can just pull the bulb out of the connector after that.

While you are at it, get some better lighting for it too. LED's will almost guarantee you'll never have to replace a bulb again

if you look closely at the light housing , you will see a little notch , stick a flat head screw driver in there and pop it out, much easier than digging around behind the bumper

The picture on ebay showed a license plate with one bulb, and I didnt even think to buy two...

Now to wait another week or so while that little tiny bulb flies here from HongKong

what if you only have one housing haha. still need to get a new 7 dollar piece of plastic from the dealer.

ive had both bulbs from hongkong and now superbrightleds.com and the ones from superbright are brighter and i think are gonna last longer than the other ones, i had to replace about 3 of them in the truck so i just did them all with ones from sbleds

I also have LED license plate bulbs.

reach up behind the bumper and follow the wires to the lights...then just twist and pull back...they will pop out and allow you to change the bulb

to change the bulb, just pull straight out on it, dont break the bulb in your hands and the new ones just push into place.

This site is awesome! I have come here asking questions to things I need fixed and NOW - you guys are answering questions before I ask them! ROCK ON! I love the look on TJ05FX4's plates with the white light. Speaking of his pic, my garage must be jacked up, because just at stock height, I had to cut down the pull unlock bar on my garage door to get my truck in. I would love to do a wheel/tire combo but wont fit in the garage. The dealer looked at me funny when I said I need to take it home to see if it will fit first! I must have a small garage door opening, but would think that those are pretty standard, so is everyone just leaving your truck outside?

TJ05FX4, can you get those lights at a normal autopart store or do you have to buy them online
