Dashboard cupholder mods?

I'm constantly amazed by the mods I see on this site, so I thought I'd throw this out there. I REALLY miss the ashtray cupholder that I had on my '99 XL. The 04-08 dashboards (at least on the XL) seems poorly designed by comparison. I don't like having to reach down next to the base of the shift lever for my drink, nor is the fold-down armrest as convenient.

So have any of you done anything about this most pressing of problems? I need a convenient spot for my and .

Would that work with a stick shift? A cupholder under the HVAC controls might obstruct it, right?

Actually it will, the XLT's come with the manual 4x4 lever on the floor also. You can also try an XLT console to replace the center seat and it will clear the 4x4 stick, I'm not sure about the manual 5 speed stick tho.

painted and installed in the truck

i think he was saying he had a manual. the hardest part was getting the cushion off the jump seat and thats because i thought i was going to break it but you wont.

the xlt swap is easy, its just 4 bolts and takes about 20 minutes to do. one of the best mods i did in my old truck. you can pick up the console for about $150-$200 shipped on ebay.

Iirc the xlts with the floor shift 4x4, like mine, have the big opening with no pull out cupholders, however, if I'm wrong I will be buying a pull out cuphoder for mine

you should have room for it with just 4x4 floor shift i would imagine. there is two holders i guess, the lower is just an empty tray (which i think if you dont have the cupholder its a larger tray or opening. with the cupholders you have the cupholder and a smaller tray opening

Let us know what you find out. I have the big useless opening as well. That cubby is too shallow even to be good for cell-phone storage.

a guy i used to work with had an 06 stx with the manual 4x4 shifter and his had the dash cupholders, along with the ones on the floor and the jumpseat.

im not sure if it would work with a manual transmission or not though.

Buy a center console jumpseat from an XLT, they have cupholders and storage.

Here's an ebay ad with pics for example.

Here's an ad in the classifieds here with pics too.

Just did that. It is a VAST improvement. At least those cupholders are more convenient than the one on the floor.
