Installed grease fittings for upper ball joints-

Had some time on my hands today so I installed grease fittings in the upper control arms so I could grease the ball joints.
Truck has 84,000 miles on it, almost all of them with the 2" leveling kit so I thought maybe I should do a little preventive maintenance..
Very simple process, center punch the location, drill the hole, insert grease fitting, and fill with grease. If you should decide to do this, just be careful when you drill, as you will only want to pierce the metal enough to screw in the fitting. Just a little piece of mind knowing that the rubber boots that surround the joints are now full of grease..I never did trust "lifetime lubrication"..

How did you keep the metal shavings from getting into the balljoint area?

X2 and; Are grease fittings self-tapping?
Can this be done to U-joints too?
Thanks, Marc B.

I greased the bit right before penetration, and I also used the shop vac to pull any that may have gotten past the grease.
Yes the grease fittings ( good ones) are self tapping.
I would not attempt to do this with U-joints. Just my personal choice.
