Vct

Hi Guys!

I recently started having some issues with my 04 5.4 and decided to replace some of the stuff that probably needs replacing anyway. With 150K, I can't complain.

Engine started idleing rough and sounded like the valves were knocking so I cleaned air filter, MAF sensor, throttle body and put it back together.

Still has a slight roughness to the idle, but not near as bad. Still has the occasional (when lifting off the accelerator, or when first pushing it) valve rattling and lack of power. Codes P0022 and P0345 showed with CEL.

After doing some searching on here, I think it could be COP or cam position sensor. They have both been ordered and I will be installing as soon as I get them.

I am also curious about the VCT. I cannot seem to find them anywhere on the internet although I have seen a DIY video about replacing them. Anyone know where to get them? Other than the dealer? A possible part number?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If the vct or cam phasers were bad, you would get the tell tale deisel rattle (the engine sounds like a deisel at idle when warmed up). Try changing the plugs if you haven't already.

I plan on replacing the spark plugs, COP's, and cam position sensors this weekend.

Mine rattles very bad when cold, usually only when pressing or releasing the throttle. It seems to go away when the engine warms up.

They're obviously better at wrenching than acting.

I just replaced everything you're questioning. start with the easy stuff - ie spark plugs. If its not noisy at warm idle, your cam phasers are ok...lucky!

The cam phasers are OK even when they make noise at warm idle.
