@ OP.

I had forgotten about the Supercharger being so cheap. That coupled with a $500 tune/programmer package from Mike Troyer and you will be set for happy 400+ HP towing with a tune that is outstanding and 100% safe for your truck.

MT has a 2006 Non-Intercooled F-150 that is his personal truck...you will get all the benefits of this.

plus, the Supercharger is a relatively easy install. I did mine in my driveway over a weekend. Hardest part of the install IMO was removing the fan clutch.

very true. but realistically, what is another $5 per tank of gas? In my eyes, if you are counting it that close, then perhaps it is time to explore another vehicle...certainly not be hot-rodding one that gets crappy MPG's already.

If they're going paycheck to paycheck I would suggest against spending money on mods in general.

They have no house payment, or food payment, they just pay for gas and anything else they buy. My friend that hates it is 19, car payment, insurance payment and still has over, 10,000 dollars in the bank.

Well then, it sounds like he's just complaining for no good reason. Living paycheck to paycheck means no money in the bank and barely enough to pay the bills.

For that money you can get tunes, intake and exhaust. It's pretty good bang for your buck.
I have the Troyer package: Tunes, AF1 intake and Roush cat back.
I just pulled a friends Rhino, my Rzr and a ***** load of camping gear on a 20' flat bed from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I flashed the 89oct towing tune before leaving. 2nd gear pulled the grades at 60 to 65mph @ around 4K rpm. Pretty good in my opinion.

On a 5.4, for $2300 you can get the Roushcharger above that comes with intake and tune and I guarantee it will blow that package away straight out of the box using the stock catback.

Get the Roushcharger while you can folks because once Roush is out of them they're gonna get a lot more expensive.

Too bad they don't make one for the 4.6.

Anyhow, I would start out with the basics:
Full true dual exhaust
Custom programmer
4.30 gears
Cold air intake

Then go from there.

above said cheap supercharger

or

gryphon and at least 4.30 gears

both will do the trick, but the supercharger is clearly the better choice. having owned a supercharged vehicle in the past (and comparing it to the non supercharged version) i know what difference it makes. turns into a beast of a torque monster

A non inter-cooled blower for towing?

Are y'all really telling this guy to do that?

Get an SCT tuner and electric fans with a good controller. Those are two mods you can keep forever and when you get around to doing more you won't have to resell.

How often do you plan on towing? When you are not towing are you mainly city driving or highway driving?

If you tow a lot and/or city drive a much greater percentage over highway driving, get gears. If not, gears are not worth it IMO.

If you can swing gears, depending on your tire size, go at least 4.11's if not jump up to 4.56's. Your gas mileage wont decrease that much, if at all. Of course that depends on how fast you drive. I like to keep my RPM's at cruising speed around 2000rpm, or as close as possible. Even while driving around town, keep your engine at 2000rpm or below and you will see gas mileage of your truck at it's peak. This is how gears with around town city driving can actually INCREASE your gas mileage.

With the correct mods, and the correct driving style, you can get great MPG and Power out of your truck for daily driving and Towing.

Yes. Keep the "out of the box" tune with the NI Roushcharger. Lot's of towing power with plenty of safety. I know. I'm towing heavy loads as high as 12,000' DA with absolutely zero issues.

It's when people start trying to eek out as much power using aftermarket tunes as possible is when they get into trouble, especially when there's no intercooling. For towing:
  1. Keep things running rich and don't get greedy
  2. Stay away from gears unless you are planning on installing larger tires
  3. Stay away from e-fans, or expect a hand grenade when hitting the mountains

Quite frankly I'm amazed anyone is even suggesting a limpy tune, intake, and gears when they can get into the 415+ hp range for the same price, safely and reliably.

Why risk it?

Plus you have to pay someone to flash your ECU, which adds money to the project, and you have to clean all the parts and usually end up paying another $200 for lines, belts, and gaskets.

And you get zero support from the MFG, unlike Roush. Add it all together and tell me if the extra 25 hp is really worth it.
