Tire Pressure Monitor System

I am not sure if this is a post allready or not, however I am wondering if the tire pressure monitor system needs to be replaced when you are just replacing tires? I am not changing rim size or tire style just the same as factory, also is there something that need to be done if the sensor does not have to be replaced. The Ford dealership wants to charge me to replace sensors and all at a price of $260 per tire for just install.

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm not 100% sure because I don't have TPMS, but I thought F-150s (and I'd assume LTs) have the band on the wheel. If you're just getting new tires or new wheels put on, they should be able to reuse the old bands. Tire shops usually charge to reuse old TPMS monitors, but not $260 each.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

On 07-08 trucks the sensor is banded to the wheel. If your keeping the factory wheel, then nothing needs to be done. If you get aftermarket wheels you will need new bands put on the new wheels, then just unclip the sensors from your old wheels and clip them to the new bands on the new wheels then mount the tire.

The only time you need to reprogram the TPMS is when you get new sensors. Your dealer is full of it. Any reputable tire shop can get you the bands and install them on the wheels, and they can move your sensors to the new wheels if needed.

If your keeping your rims and just replacing tires nothing needs to be done, your old sensors stay. If your mounting tires on new wheels you can re-use the sensors and have new bands installed on your new wheels. I paid about $20.00 for bands total at the shop.

My local Discount tire wants 218.00 to swap mone from OEM to aftermarket wheels. I am going to pull the bulb out ion the dash and be done with it. Will this cause any problems?

No bulb, its an LED soldered in. You have to put tape or black nail polish over it.

That's outrageous. I was digging up my receipt from Discount when I had mine swapped last summer, and couldn't find it. I know it was less than 20.00 to mount and balance per tire, the sensor bands cost 20.00 additional. I know I was in and out for less than 100.00. The other tire store in town charged by the inch, so it was 17.00 per tire.

I am going to call them today for another quote. I remember them mentioning new sensors and programming which I don’t need if they are only replacing the bands.

Discount tire swapped my TPMS from the 17's over to my 20's when I had tires mounted to the new wheels just a month ago. It was a little under $100. It did take them quite a while to get it all done. They are bound by law to repair or replace the TPMS when you purchase wheels and the vehicle is factory equipped with the system.

I think the whole thing stinks, but there it is.

I called them again. I am taking them 4 new wheels with 4 new tires. To take mine off, swap the TPMS and balance the new wheels is 218.00. Screw that. I will go somewhere else. What sucks is I used to work there, if they would let me use the damn machine I could do it myself. What a damn rip-off. I guess I will find someplace else or tear my dash apart to tape off the stupid LED.

The dash comes apart very easy, takes maybe 15 minutes top. You cannot pull out the LED, I rolled a ball of black electrical tape and stuffed it in the square opening of the light, thus blocking the light so that it wouldn't show on the panel. It is a pain in the butt, I know when my tires are low, I don't need an idiot light to tell me.

That’s good to know and I agree. Anyone who takes reasonably good care of their vehicle will know when a tire is low. Idiot lights are for…. Well, idiots. Lol good to know the dash come apart easily. My message center won’t display anything will it?

Try a Walmart with an auto service center. I've checked their prices for mounting and balancing before, and they seem to be much lower than anywhere else. Not sure about TPMS, but it's worth a shot.
