Hard shift and clunk between gears

Hey guys,

Just had a remanu. upgraded tranny put in about 800 miles ago. Driving around town, I've got some real hard shifts that generate a heavy "clunk" feeling throughout the truck. The entire truck jolts for a split second, like a really hard shift.

This generally only happens at low RPMS in the 20-30 mph range, or when downshifting into second.

Any ideas? Normal for a tough tranny?

Thanks.

eh, i dont know. ill go and wiggle the shaft around and what not, but im not getting any noises other than the clunk. i know that they usually make a screeching sound if they go bad, and also, i dont have any jerking from D into Reverse.

i went and did the whole "put truck in neutral and pull on drive shaft thing" and the drive shaft itself will twist maybe a 1/4 quarter inch, of play. but nothing up and down or side to side at the joints. the twist also follows through to the transmission, so I think this is normal movement.

any ideas?

Actually that is not normal movement. It sounds like your slip yoke might be bad. If you have a 1 piece driveshaft, drop the shaft and check the splines on the output of the trans and on the slip yoke or flange. Do the same for a 2 piece shaft but also check out the center slip joint. If everything checks out ok, then see if the slop is in the trans itself. Where ever the slop or loosenes is you need to get it fixed, otherwise it will get worse over time and eventually break something.

Do these trucks even have a 2 piece driveshaft? I've never seen a new body style with a 2 piece. Maybe if you have an 8ft bed but like I said, I've never seen it.

mine is a one piece driveshaft.

the play is definitely coming from the tranny... or torque converter... whatever it directly attaches to in the front.

so with that said... what does that mean? i have an appt on monday to have it all looked at.
