Two Potential Buyers, One Truck: What would you do?

I mentioned this in another thread, but that thread is dying a slow death...

My truck is priced at $16,500. I don't need to sell it, but would like to. Preferably so I can get an '09 of something else as '09 season winds down, along with the prices.

I have had two serious buyers in the past week. I have one offer on the table for $15K. I have another guy, I believe to be mulling $16K. I had anticipated him to get back to me after the weekend, after he looked at a couple other trucks. However as of this moment, he hasn't gotten back to me.

The guy offering $15K currently has an older FX4 that's got a tranny that's starting to go on him and he wants another one. He said his current one has about 180,000 miles on it. He said his credit union will only give him a loan for $15,000 because that's what they say it's worth according KBB because of the miles. (Which can't be right, becuase I KBB'd it and it came up at $16,455.) And he works for the postal service, and makes an ok living. He puts food on the table, etc. and can't scrape together anything additional. (But then he's selling his truck after for like $6K or $7K so, I think he can scrape it together.)

Then he says, "Well you live in such and such, so you're obviously pretty well off." And I'm thinking, "That doesn't mean I need to take less money for my truck." Then he starts talking about how he doesn't really like the blue color and says, "If it were black..." Sort of stopped himself there, I think because he realized he's letting the cat out of the bag that he can pony up some more dough than his $15K max. He told me he buys and sells cars a lot.

I e-mailed $15K guy last night just keeping him up to date, but also sent him the actual KBB Value, along with the NADA value and my total of additions I put into the truck, so he can see it's worth more than $15K. I didn't reject his $15K offer, but told him I was hesitant to go there because of the value, etc.

$16K guy is real nice and upstanding. And he seemed very interested. He looked at it for about an hour. I'm thinking of calling or e-mailing him, but don't want to sound desperate to sell, because I'm not. And if I tell him someone else is interested, he might think I'm trying to push him and then he might back out.

So, my question to you guys is...what would you do? Contact $16K guy? Wait him out a little longer? Let him know there's another interested party? Try and bring up $15K guy? Sell for $15K? Forget them both and market it a little more aggressively, other than on two free websites?

Let me know your thoughts.

Talk is cheap. The bottom line?...first guy to hand me $16.5K-$16K gets it. Period!

I would too, in a heartbeat, but he's still mulling my telling him $16K. He hasn't said ok to that yet, and hasn't called me back yet either.

Did 15K guy respond to your email? Are you sure he even still wants the truck? He may only off 14K now that it's been a few days. Sounds like the type, anyway.

Doesn't sound like you're in a hurry at all to sell the truck. If you were it would have been gone at 15K. I say wait it out. You'll get more lookers.

I sent it late last night and haven't been home yet to check it. He told me to give him a call later in the week. He knows I'm in no immediate need to sell it. I thought he may offer less, but he's got no shot of getting it then. He already told me he's got $15K, so he's not going down now as far as I'm concerned.

Wait for the 16k guy, tell him no pressure because you don't need to sell it but would like to. Also, explain another guy is looking at it but does not seem as nice as him and you want to sell it to 16k guy but would like an answer in 3 days or so. Again, being nice but explaining somewhat your situation.

That's what I was leaning towards doing. If he's just trying to work me over and really wants the truck he'll come up with the extra $1K. If he already went through the trouble to go apply for a loan at his credit union and give them my truck info for the loan, he either really wants it or is a total liar and didn't really do anything.

If your in no hurry hold out for the 16,500. I would not call or E-mill anyone, let them come to you. Makes it sounds like your desperate to sell and would take less.

Also something I was considering. I want to sell to $16K guy, but without sounding desperate to sell. More like I'm doing him a favor.

Business is business. Nothing wrong with telling 15k guy its 16k no less. Also doesnt hurt to let 16k guy now that there is another potential buyer. Explain to him the first 16k in hand gets truck. Its real simple and you're not being a jerk about it. Again its business. Good luck with your sale.

I also just tell people that others are interested but want to give the higher offer the first chance as they seem more interested in truck
