Retrieving Boat from Water

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to get some opinions/suggestions on what you guys do to get your boats out of the water without spinning? I have a 21ft bayliner and it spins everytime I try to get it out. Does anyone have any special tricks the do that they can share? I have a 2005 5.4 and 3.55LS Supercrew.

First thing you could try is to use 2nd gear. Less torque that way so less likely to spin.

x2 I know when I place mine in 2nd there is no way it will spin...just revs and pulls.

A little bit of axle weight never hurts, I've heard of guys laying sand bags in the bed of their truck between the wheel wells, for added traction.

The only other advice is to trade it in for a 4X4, I know its not feasable for some, but for others its a must. Lee

I had to put 3 guys in the back yesterday to get the boat out....Ill definitely try 2nd geat next time, I was in 1st yesterday. Id like to go out without having to get other people to jump on my truck, especially at night.

Id say for sure since its 2wd, get more aggressive tires that can hold better grip, and yes the 2nd gear works real well IMO.

I put my boat in on a private ramp. It is concrete, but the mud that the Ohio river lays down is slicker than snot There is no way I would be able to pull my boat out in 2 wheel drive on many occasions, especially in the spring after the water level finally drops. This is the main reason I have a 4x4. That said, I would suggest much weight over the wheels and more aggressive tires as others have stated.

Being in 1st is just like being in D except it doesn't shift. 2nd gear all the way!

I've got a 22' Chaparral and I've always kept it in drive, but I'm easy on the throttle. Never thought about putting it in 2nd since I've never really had that problem I guess...

I only pull out a 16ft aluminum boat, but if for some reason if I start to slip I throw it in 4L. Now I see that you dont have a 4wd so I think the 2nd gear option would be your best best. That and a few sandbags in the bed couldn't hurt, nor would a more aggressive tread pattern

more aggresive tires are not going to help you unless you are in mud. if you are on a paved ramp they would only make it worse. weight in the bed is your best bet as well as trying 2nd gear.

Something else you can do is get a bucket that has a lid, even some of the cat litter containers will work. Put some sand in it a strap it into the bed in a corner. Keep a plastic cup in with it and spread about a cup of sand in front and under at least one tire. Should give you more traction, especially if it is a wet/muddy paved ramp. With LS, you will probably only need to put it in front of one tire, unless you really floor it a defeat the LS.

Drop your air pressure. But be mindful when you reduce tire air pressure, you reduce payload capacity.

In combination with the other suggestions.
