do you need 4x4?
During the summer I only use 4x4 a couple times, either for firewood runs up logging roads or to help pull boats off the launch.
During winter I use 4x4 probably 3 times a week for hunting, and when up at the ranch during winter in freezing weather & snow I use 4x4 everyday.

I use my 4x4 at least twice a month. Hell, I just used it last night out in the desert to get up a hill climb. My friend made it up the hill with a prerunner ranger that's 4x2 though but he had to haul *** up it
I got stuck in a small drainage ditch about 15yrs ago with my 2wd 1971 Chevy C-10...Never had another 4x2 truck since until recently...got pulled out by a S-10
I almost always end up doing something incredibly stupid with my 4x4 trucks. The FX4 ended up in some very bad places and up on 2 wheels...all because I had a 4x4...wouldn't have dared doing that stupid crap with a 4x2
I normally live by the adage "It's better to have it and never use it, than need it once, and not have 4x4"
however

which is funny considering I just bought a 4x2 Expedition...good thing I live in Hawaii I guess
I live in Wisconsin not far from 08stx4x4. I have now owned 3 different F-150s and all of them have been 2wd. I don't hunt or fish, so don't have much reason to leave the pavement. I just make sure that I have good tires with a more aggressive tread and keep the gas tank full for a little weight on the back tires. I get around just fine. Just have to use your head a little bit.
I had a few 2wd trucks (baby trucks- S10 and a Ranger) and would never own another 2wd truck.
I dont like driving rwd in the winter and I ride my quad on the river ice and need to park on the ice and go up a hill so its usefull there.
Since buying the truck in February Ive only used the 4wd twice but we didnt have any real bad weather since I bought it.
Its nice to have it and not use it instead of needing it and not having it.

i really dont need it. been nice to have while at the beach, trail ride occasionally i usually wont do stuff where i think ill get stuck tho just cuz i dont wanna tear up the truck, i usually baby it for the most part while offroad cuz the repairs just aren't worth it to me. i do like having it tho, i have had to pull a couple people outta ditches and few people outta mud but i dont need it at all, just figured id rather have it than not. and i like being lifted also and i figured if we ever take a vacation up north during winters my parents will have a vehicle to take and not worry about the weather and their vehicle.

Lived in Germany for 3 years and drove a BMW 528i. No problem reaching the slopes for a winter vaca in the Austrian Alps. Attended university in WV for 4 years and rode a Kawasaki 600RR in all seasons. Never went down and never missed a class. Now I'm living in Texas and have owned my truck since '03 which has seen pastures, meadows, dirt roads, stream forging, beaches, sand dunes and even rutted out logging roads all without a 4wd option. I did get dug in once and was pulled free by another 2wd with better footing.
Besides, if I find myself in a place that is too difficult for the truck to handle, I'll just drop the tailgate and ride out my yz250.

With the exception of job related or living up north I don't think it's really needed. However I think otherwise it boils down to how often do you want to go offroad. I use it about once a month. There's no where I go that I couldn't have taken any of my old 4x2's and if my quad can't get there I don't need to be there. In short I could do without it if I had to but I'd rather not.

I have it and while I don't use it very often, it does serve a purpose when hunting mainly. I will never buy a truck/SUV without 4x4 though, just something I think should go with a truck to truly make it an all purpose vehicle.

I've owned a 4x4 since 1980. My last vehicle was was a 2wd Expedition. I hunt and while I don't need 4x4 often, when I need it, I need it. I never got stuck in my Expedition in the 6 years I owned it, but I had a few pucker moments. It did have limited slip, but that's not always enough. I don't feel the mileage penalty is that significant.
I use mine about once every 1-2 weeks and love it. I bought an FX4 for a reason, to use it. I too like other have had smaller 2wd trucks and not been happy with their performance off on a road-side shoulder of a jobsite. Now that I have 4wd, LSD and strobes, I go anywhere I want to even with my crappy street tires. My job takes me off of the road twice a month, or more often and I have yet to worry in this truck, but have been stick in both of my last 2wd trucks. Too bad I do really get compensated for having 4wd, but I love using it. I am glad to know I use it as much, and if not more than the average 4wd owner. I do not consider myself an avid off-roader either, just a guy who dislikes pavement and those who travel upon it
. To each his own I guess.

I've had 4x4 in the past, and I always got stuck. So I went with 4x2, and I haven't got stuck.
With 4x2, you know better than to go into a snowbank because you've got the fear shaking in your bones that you know you will get stuk.

As stated before, very handy (and sometimes necessary) when putting my boat in and taking it out at the lake. I also use it after a good rain when retreiving my camper or boat out of my backyard. I found that if I try to pull my camper out of the backyard in 2wd I tend to tear up a lot of **** !!
As far as using it out on the road, little to none.

ha yeah in ga normal driving very rarely calls for it. ive used it for mud boggin but thats about it, oh and like once i think for those couple of days that it snowed this past winter.
