Built a mock side step today. Would you Pay for them??
i used 12ga. for the smooth part, wich is about .11" thick incase u weren't familiar with ga. thickness, and the tread plate is .125". I'm not sure how stout a full length one will be out of 12ga. My shear and brake will only handle up to 12. but i think if i put some reinforcement through the middle of it, it should be ok. the only other thing im worried about is warping out of a piece that long. I might get snazy and try to make them tuck up under the truck and then drop down when the doors are open. Im sure i could make them cheaper than those $1300 dollar ones(name escapes me)!

I would like to have a set of the 09 style side box steps that slide in and out under the box. I wish someone woud make them for the 04-08s. The next time I am near a Ford dealer I am going to stop and see if they have any on a truck, so I see how they mount up. My biggest gripe with this generation of F150 is the box is so tall and deep.
The steps sherrod made look nice but the hide away side steps are great to me. If someone came up with an aftermarket kit that would bolt up relativly easy and maybe with just a couple of holes drilled, they would have a winner I think. I know I would be interested.

Keep anything diamond plate far away from that truck.
It looks excellent but very time consuming to make. I've been welding and fabricating different stuff for years and I wouldn't even attempt that.
I think it would be worth the time and effert to do a full size set and see how they turn out.
As for a finish powder coating would be good but Line-X would be even better.
I for one would be very interested in a set for my '06 SuperCab.

Looks good, I love the look of diamond plate.
However, my experiences with Steel Diamond plate is that if it gets wet, it's slick. (oddly aluminum diamond plate not so bad, lugs must be more aggressive)
Not much good for steping on for a running board or hitch step unless you'd line-x that to keep good foot traction, and skip the powder coat.
The company I work for makes fabricates diamond plate trench covers and things like that, but the stuff is almost never exposed to wet conditions. It's almost always used indoors if its actually being used to walk on.
My 2 cents anyway.

well i attemted my first full length one this weekend............I gotta try again
It was just too much welding for that length of metal and it warped up a bit. Also I'm using a leaf break and its kinda hard to put a short lip like that on that thick of metal, that long. so a diffrent desing is in the works. mabey ill try again next friday.
