Start with the easiest things first, check the fuses and the connector on the trasfer case to see that it didn't get unplugged or damaged.

c'mon guys. somebody could have at least given him the easiest most likely solution first.

@ OP
take a hammer and crawl under the truck. on the back of the t-case is a small electric shift motor...looks like a mid-sized pill bottle

give that motor a few whacks with the hammer

start the truck and shift to 4x4.
if this fixes it, then your 4x4 shift motor has started to corrode. the hammer trick will fix it for a while...but eventually the motor will just corrode solid.

either way, you should try shifting into 4x4 at least 1-2 times per month. keeps things moving, and the corrosion (if any), gets knocked loose

Yep... rapping the transfer case shift motor with a hammer worked for me. So far everything is still ok after about 6 months. I think these things get a bit of corrosion or something if you don't activate it for months on end.

Here's a thread from a ways back: https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...age-4h-4l.html

Other than a few more whacks with the hammer just to get it back to 2 wheel, I don't know what to say.

Yes, those ESOF motors are a royal pain and go south far too often. A hammer rap will sometimes wake one up, but it's on the way out the door.

Here's what I'd suggest. Check your Owner's Manual. There's a very specific sequence required to get in or out of 4 Low. The older a truck gets, the more important the sequence - and the slower it goes. The most important thing is to be in Neutral. If you want to rap the motor again, make sure you block both sides of one tire before you crawl under there. If the motor gave up the ghost going into 4 Low, it's a slow drive to a garage.

motor on

switch in 4x4 lo

truck in park

take switch to 4x4hi...wait for the light on dash to change

take switch to 4x2

you have to be in Park, or in Neutral at a complete stop with foot on the brake...otherwise the shift interlock won't allow the t-case to shift from or to 4x4lo
