They don't, if your only working on the parking brake. But if you are changing out the backing plate, then you need to pull the axles out to get the plates off.

What he said. I don't think one can get the plate past the wheel hub, so out comes the axle. I can see how this can become a 700 buck job if the plates need replaced...and I agree that Ford did not design the e-brake well.

Okay so basically, I should take the wheels off and inspect the brakes and back plates and determine whether they actually need to be replaced or whether or not it just needs grease or if one of my brake cables are bad?

My only concern is, how do I lift a lifted truck? lol.....haven't gotten a flat yet so I am not sure if the stock equipment works.

A TSB is not a recall.

It's just a technical service bullentin on how to diagnose and possibly fix a problem, but hell i wish it was a recall....alot easier for me and many of us with these problems

This thread started out with Ford wanting to replace the back plates. Is that necessary or might he just need to replace/repair the ebrakes?

I'm really surprised that Ford didn't make an electronic e-brake system using the calipers instead of making 2 brakes...

I have to agree but so far, many have determined that it isn't necessary and that unless its rusted through, I shoudn't worry too much about it and just grease it and check other stuff.

Just wish I knew of someone who solved this problem. I know it has to do with my ebrake because when I pull it, it doesnt release entirely.

Had a similar problem with my mustang and turned out to be an ebrake cable.....so who knows, it could be that.

You're lifting on the axle like you would be if it wasn't modified. Even if you have hellashously large tires, still just means you have to jack a little farther to get to the axle. I don't care for the original jack, hardly adequate at best, I personally use a bottle jack.

Without seeing a parts breakdown and how it all goes together, I can't really say anything about the validity of having to replace the backing plates. It all depends how it all goes together. However, if the rear axle goes together the old fashioned way, the hub is part of the axle and the only way to get the new one on (admit it, there are MANY ways to get the old one off...most destructive) is with the axle removed. When I was a kid I had to do it on my 79 Cutlass one Sunday afternoon. It's really not that hard of a job unless Ford did some funky stuff back there. $700 seems a little steep tho. I'd definitely get a second opinion tho. It's easy to scam people on brake issues since they're kinda important and failure can be catastrophic.

Well I spoke to my ford guy again and he confirmed that this is the only way around it....he said the backing plates are rusted from all the salt it has taken in through the last few winters and seeing its an 04 and we are in 09, it lasted a pretty damn good time.........so i guess I have to find the money and get it fixed to get rid of this issue asap.

Keep in mind, this truck got me through every single snow storm in NJ this year and if you know NJ in the winter, you know their roads are basically like a beach after a snow storm......so I guess I can blame NJ for the premature destruction of them? lol

oh well just being alittle funny since i'm losing $700 of mod money

This is why every father should teach his son/or daughter how to do some basic repairs to a vehicle.

I still find it VERY hard to believe that that a sticky ebrake fix would take $700.

They are taking you to the cleaners dude!

Did you go to another brake shop and get an estimate like some others have told ya to do?

If not, I'd bet your just throwing money into that other mechanic's pocket.

Another thing. 5 years and something is rusted so bad it doesn't work anymore????????
