What are the MAJOR ENGINE differences between 08 & 09?

Just wondering what has been changed besides the 6spd tranny. I have a new 08, and the X3.

The head design of the 09 and some of the 08 models so the plugs don't break like they are in most 3v trucks.

PCM has a faster processor(otherwise the same) I also understand the 6spd has it's own separate computer. Might get interesting when it comes to tranny swaps in our trucks.

Dont know anything about the engine. The owner of the hotel I am wiring has an 09 that he traded his 07 for and says it makes the 07 seem like a junker. That bummed me out a bit. But my 06 makes my old 00 seem like a junker too. Doesnt the 09 have increased horsepower?

You're fine. It was changed early in the production year. If you have brown plug boots instead of the black, you have the redisigned heads.

Based on info in a TSB, engines built after October 8, 2007 should have the revised head with the new spark plug. Engine build dates are stamped on the driver side valve cover and preceed the vehicle build dates. Are you sure your build date is September 2008, and not 2007? I can't imagine they were still building 2008 models in September 2008.

Went and put a remote filter box in instead of the panel style on top of the motor.

Windsor- He could have an '08 built in Sept.'08 (I'm not saying he does, just that it could be possible) because the '09's were supposed to debue about then but they actually held back 1st production on the '09's for 2 months because there was so much inventory on dealers lots ('08's) that they wouldn't even have place to put the '09's. The largest Ford dealer in our area had over 500 new '08 F-150's in stock when the '09's were set to come out. Most likely he has an '08 built in Sept. '07.

You don't even have to lift the hood. Look at the production date on the L door post, if it says Sept. '07, you definitely have the old heads and 2 piece plugs. If it says Sept. '08, you should definitely have the new heads and plugs.

OFF TOPIC:
you cannot go by Door sticker

you must check the engine build sticker on the block itself.

I agree about a truck built in late 2007 will most likely have the old heads, but you could buy a truck built in 2008 with a motor built anytime in 2007.

can we get back to the original question guys?

There was a major change to the FI cycle on the new 2009 engines:

"We're told this new 5.4-liter V8 uses Ford's new "open valve injection" technology and as the name suggests, injects fuel into the cylinders while the intake valves are open (instead of closed like during conventional combustion cycles). The incoming air improves the mixture of air and fuel before the 'charge' is ignited. Ford says the result is increased horsepower during towing, higher RPMs, and an improvement in emissions from the more efficient burn..."

http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/new...-revealed.html

Note that 320hp is only available on E85. Regular gas gets you 310hp. Still whimpy in a truck this size. You can imagine the dangers of supercharging such a cycle as well.

One additional change to the injection cycle is noted here:

"The Ford F-150 also regulates gas consumption by using aggressive deceleration fuel shut-off. The fuel shut-off is automatic and requires no unusual actions from the driver. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the system temporarily turns off the fuel. The flow of fuel seamlessly resumes when the truck reaches a low speed or the driver accelerates again."

Ford typically shuts down production of models in mid summer and begins building the next year's model well before the release date. There's usually some re-tooling that has to be done for any new model as well. I do recall the late release of the 2009, but I sort of doubt they produced the 2008 that late. My truck was one of those 2008s that sat on a lot for almost a year before I bought it. Built January 2008, purchased December 2008.

I just read that the 2009 went into production in October 2008, so it's possible they produced 2008s up to that date.
