Troyer's new valve body
I've installed it in my truck. I have the SCT Advantage software for my truck and had increased the line pressures and decreased the shift delay times before I bought the valve body. I felt there was still room for improvement and got the valve body. I have the pressures just about back to stock, and actually reduced from stock in some cases, after the valve body swap. You can't get the results from software alone that you can with the valve body.
It is not that difficult to swap out the valve body, but working on your back to access some of the springs with fluid dropping down on you leaves something to be desired. It is a very messy operation, so make sure you have room for about 3 gallons of transmission fluid in your catch pan. I took the opportunity to install a deeper aluminum pan on my transmission. The valve body comes with pretty good instructions and a couple of large baggies to ship your messy valve body back to them.

I don't have troyers VB but I do have a similar modded one. I love it. My first gripe about my truck was how sloppy it shifted and the amount of time it took to shift. I hated it even with a tuner. I think the VB plus the tuner is the perfect mix.
Expect a little bit more harsh firm ride with lower trany temps from less slipping. I'd put one in again no questions asked.

If you do a valve body you should also have a tuner. I'd say the price to do it right starts around 700+ (vb + tuner +tuning). Most people also throw a deep pan on, switch all the oil over to synthetic which also needs a hydraulic flush. It will get pricey.
I'd say you are more likely to blow your trany with just a tuner. Higher line pressures and more heat from slipping. With a valve body you can run less pressure than stock.

Eventually I'll be at 400 RWHP, and this is just one of those mods that needs to get done
does it help lower some of the driveline HP/TQ losses? I would think so if there is less slippage

If money is an issue, you can get a separator plate to help move more fluid through the valve body, but that's close to $100 and a little more work than you have to do with Troyer's valve body. There is a quite a bit written about the separator plate in these forums. I looked into that mod and ended up going with Troyer's valve body, since it was developed to work together and was a more complete solution. I've read mixed reviews about the separator plate. Some saying it's too harsh. No doubt Troyer's valve body uses a similar separator plate, but he supplies springs for the application. I also switched over to Mobil 1 ATF when I did the install.
I think I will be ordering Troyer's valve body. When I first got the truck I got a intake and tuner (xcal2) for it, so I just used the tuner to jack up the line pressure. It was ok for a while, but I just didn't like the pressure turned up all the time. Also, the shifts at heavy to WOT were still sloppier than I liked. Now, I am running Factory Tech's "C" plate and I'm still not satisfied. Yeah, it helped with the sloppy heavy throttle stifts, but every now and then, the 1st to 2nd shift with heavy to WOT, it wouldn't shift at all or shift very sloppy and other times it would be nice and firm. I was also able to return the line pressure to stock value. I switched to Royal Purple ATF when I installed the plate.
hopefully you meant Mercon V or better. since regular ATF is not what your vehicle calls for.
You can still do the Jmod on the new trans, but you need a tuner to tell the PCM what is going on, and really need to disable the engine timing retardation just before shifts.

Actually Ford no longer uses the tip in strategy in the later model trucks. Ford uses a "target slip time" parmeter that controls the time it takes the clutches to apply the shift in milliseconds through the PCM. With this parameter, they control the rate of slip between gear changes. You still need a tuner to change the parameter, but the oem time delay settings lengthen at higher loads and speeds. I'm sure most custom tuners take care of the delay in their tunes.

Your post made me laugh. I had my line pressure set a little too high in my truck with the VB. I had the lady in the truck and went full throttle and she thought we were rear ended the truck shifted so violently. Mean while I just had this grin on my face haha!
Yeah, RP Max ATF is what I used, which is compatible with Mercon and Mercon V. You can go to royalpurple.com and they have a compatibility chart, which they suggest the Max ATF for most applications.
