cold air intake or headers
don't bother with the longtubes...at best you'll see a 15-20 HP gain...at best...and you are likely to spend $1,000+ for a good set of them
A CAI will get you 5-15 hp with custom tunes
do you have a tuner already?

Definetly a cold air intake because a set of headers will set you way back. Espically if you have a 4x4. You could also add a cat back exhaust or some type of duals if you haven't already to compliment the air intake. But a set of headers will cost you a lot of coin when you add in the install and everything.
You literally have a ton of choices when it comes to an intake.
Some of the more open intakes are K&N with your choice of black intake hose or polished chrome. AEM is also open. Which they are good for the street and what not, but I don't know how well I would like one in dusty conditions. It may just take alittle while to clean and re-oil but it would get old if the filter was getting dirty often.
Some closed intakes that are good are the Voolant and S&B. I went with the S&B on my 5.4 because of all the info that S&B has on their website and so far I haven't been disappointed.
When I had my scab F-150 with the 4.6L I had a K&N 77 Series(the chrome) and was happy with it. It definetly made the intake growl, but my S&B does the same of coarse it's on a bigger motor to.
Basically you should just look around at what there is to offer and see what you like. I would think all cai are close on hp, but just make sure you get something that applies to your driving situations.
autoanything.com has some really good prices on intakes for the f-150 or atleast they did when I ordered mine.

Yeah you have to wash and re-oil them, but with the closed box they are less apt to get dirty. The S&B is espically nice with the clear lid. Not only does it give a good look, but you can look right in on the filter and see if it's dirty or not. I have only cleaned mine once in two years that it needed it.
I think AEM has dry flow filter technology where you wash it, let it dry and then reinstall without having to re-oil.
