my dad and i both have 08' f-150s and he has a factory bed extender just sitting in the garage. first, can you buy just the mounting hardware? also, how do you get to the bolt that the mounting bolt screws into?

Yes. You can order the mounting hardware from Ford. Then you can use the extender on either your truck or your Dad's. There is a hole in your fender where you screw the mounting bolt into, it's just not threaded. The bolt is self taping. A 3/8-16 tap will help get it started. Don't tap it out, just cut a starter groove. The SuperCab may require a nut, but your pic shows a Screw.

Here are part numbers minus the flare nut which can be found locally.
2 w707381-s900 bolts
4 YL3Z-84286A54-AA Grommets or rubber washers.

I just can't picture it??? Can you get pics? There was a nut that came with my hardware which I did not use on a SuperCrew. I would take a pic if I knew where I tossed it.

Look at the nut on his SuperCrew, then look at yours. You will find the same nut, only without threads.

both sides of the bed have three holes. the top and bottom holes have the rubber gromets in them.the middle hole as nothing. the middle hole is where the bed extender mounts on and where it pivots. that bolt where it pivots on screws into a nut and i can't figure out how to get to it, maybe through the rear lights. both trucks are 08', his is the 5.5 bed and mine has the 6.5 bed. that is really the only difference between the two.

6.5 bed, that's different. Nice truck dude! Let me look at the install paper.

OK. The directions are different for the 6.5' bed. You do need the nut for your truck. Your Dad's does not have one. I shows taking the tail light off. They remove the bulbs and everything.

"Screw in the pivot pin. Do not tighten. Snug only. Install bed extender with bed extender lock pins in closed position. Remove bed extender and torque pivot pin to 55 +/- 8.5Nm."

Then it shows you put the nut on the pivot pin. The nut is basic off the shelf hardware. It looks like a nut with attached washer. You will need a T50 for the pivot pin.

Take a pic for us when you get the tail light off.
