Fix-it-ticket for tails!
I'd check the FL statutes first and print it. I got stopped a while back for having a tinted license plate cover and the cop said it was illegal to have a tinted tag cover and tinted headlights, but said nothing about tails. Your 3rd brake light works too, right? Sounds like someone had his boxers in a bunch the other night.
wow, alot of people saying "F" the law
What about the person behind you who can't see your brake-lights in the rain or fog because they are tinted to darkly. These laws didn't just randomly get pulled out of someone's rear end. They exist for a reason...stupid as you may think it is
kinda sad when a cop gets called a "Douche Bag" for merely doing his job.

I dont know how the cops are in your area, but i know the cops in my home town like chasing girls under the age of 18, drinking, and doing nothing but bull **** stuff! The cops in the area im in now (south eastern georgia, north eastern florida) are complete crap too! I got pulled over for 2 miles over the speed limit, and he wrote me a ticket... I took it to court and won, because i have over sized tires, and prooved that the cop was a total jackass. And that is my opinion, dont like it, well sorry i dont care.. There are to many people that have a badge, that shouldn't, i am a man of the law, i wear a uniform every day, both military, and law enforcement since im in the Coast Guard.
There is plenty of other things cops can be doing other then pulling people over for bull **** things on there trucks or cars! The drugs and underage drinking are out of control where i come from, and they are out of control here in Jacksonville, and southern Georgia... and from what i see, nothing is being done about it... sad yes!
@ the OP
Did you ever get any tails? or find out the exact law reguarding tails?
wow...you are a man of the Law. Glad you find your fellow brothers are so worthless. Wish I could pass along to them your opinions...I'm sure they could use your insight about their services and endeavors.
By your definition, I too am a "Man of the Law" since I to am in the service...I might not be a "Man of the Law" 100% though since I'm DoD and not Homeland Security. Either way, I have nothing but respect for the Law
Been pulled over many times over the years, and strangley have never recieved a ticket. Must be because I don't B.S. the cops and I know I have always been wrong in the first place. Never been pulled over "Just Because" or that the cop had nothing better to do.
When I've been pulled over, it was because I damn well deserved it. My attitude and acknowledgement of being wrong are what kept me from getting ticketed.
funny, but I thought the Cops out there in Southern Georgia were pretty cool when I lived there in 2002. Kings Bay and Jacksonville were favorite haunts before my ship did a Homeport change to the West Coast.
Here is a little tip for you. Don't Speed in Georgia, and be a very paranoid driver when you cross the FL/GA border. That will solve 99% of any hassles that might have occured.
BTW, I don't know of any Judge who would drop a ticket based on oversized tires. That means you were actually going faster than your speedo says. Not to mention you are acknowledging you are aware of the speedo being incorrect and were intentially speeding...something don't jive

Might also be that I don't intentionally drive illegally or do illegal things to my vehicles...occasionally I get a wild hair...and then I see those damn flashing blue lights.
I bought a SUV last year with 15% tint and the limit is 35%...it doesn't have any tint right now because I respect the law, and the $250 ticket/window is a big incentive to be legal.

This is somewhat off topic, but I'll say it anyway. There are a great number of police officers who display actions that would have gotten me ticketed, or even arrested, if I did it. I've witnessed an officer drive between the travel lane and curb so she could get to the Circle K because she had to pee. I was behind another who flipped on the lights real quick to go thru an intersection when the light was red (he had already stopped for a minute) only to pull into a 7Eleven, and watched another do abrupt lane changes during rush hour and full (or close to it) throttle accelerations at every red light on 2 main roads. I think the richest was a Sheriff's deputy who admitted (to friends) having his brights and take down lights on while burying the needle in his patrol car at 3am on a back road/freeway one morning. There seems to be a bit of hypocricy behind the badge.
316.221 of the Florida Statutes states:
(1) Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer, and any other vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least two taillamps mounted on the rear, which, when lighted as required in s. 316.217, shall emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of 1,000 feet to the rear, except that passenger cars and pickup trucks manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1972, which were originally equipped with only one taillamp shall have at least one taillamp. On a combination of vehicles, only the taillamps on the rearmost vehicle need actually be seen from the distance specified. On vehicles equipped with more than one taillamp, the lamps shall be mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable. An object, material, or covering that alters the taillamp's visibility from 1,000 feet may not be placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied over a taillamp.
The question now becomes: Are your tails still visible from 1000 feet? They may have you on this one. I'd find an extra set of lights, pay the fix-it ticket (they're still cheap, right), keep a copy of the statute in the truck with you for future use and run tint.

The question isn't really are they visible from 1,000 ft. What you just quotes says "alters visibility from 1,000 ft."
It does indeed alter visibility. Think about the old woman driving behind you when it is raining, 1/4 mile visibility, and you have your tail lights painted black. I suppose you're going to blame her when she rear ends you also, right?
The reason we have stupid laws like this is because people don't always use common courtesy or common sense.
I'm personally tired of people making their lights darker, and putting the ventshade covers over their headlights.
I have tinted windows, I know they are darker than legal, but they are not making my vehicle less visible. If I get ticketed for them I'll pay it, and not complain about some cop on a power trip, when he is simply doing his job.
