making xlt into decent off road truck

hey guys hope everyone is doing well. few quick questions. just bought a 08 xlt 4x4 with axel code 19. im going to be moving to a pretty remote area soon and i dont need to be getting stuck. I would like to put in a limited slip in the rear. any suggestions for brand price etc? would i need to install one in front as well? Is the axle on my truck different than on the fx4 or off road models, or is the only difference the limited slip, non limited slip. any other suggestions? thanks!

If you are worried about getting stuck in 4x4 limited slip won't help out much. You are better off getting a locker and some decent tires.

whats xlt have to do with anything? if you have the 5.4 there is not one single thing different from your truck and a lariat, fx4 (besides rancho shocks), KR suspension, drivetrain wise

if you have the 4.6 you have a different tranny and a smaller rear end. what gears are in your truck?

i have a xlt 4x4 4.6 with 35's 6" lift and i have no trouble what so ever offroading. truck has done great in anything i have thrown at it

Get a Winch, full size spare of whatever tire you choose, extra water and fuel cans. First Aid kit and granola bars that last a long time. Also, any cell phone automatically becomes a satellite phone when 911 is dialed. I have 3 cell phones, one for work, one for personal, and one as a backup (Basically one of my old work phones). A basic tool kit and Hi Lift Jack. A REALLY< REALLY GOOD FLASHLIGHT and a gun. Oh and always pack extra clothes.

I packed all of these (except a winch) working pipeline right of way across TN. I had to drive an hour from some places to get cell phone reception. I know you probably already thought of some of these but you make it sound like your going REALLY remote. AT LEAST you got the right truck for it.

I would consider putting Eaton TrueTracs in both front and rear diffs. These limited slips have excellent road manners, work well for all but hard core off roading, and don't require any maintainance or rebuilding. Coupled with a good set of tires and the other suggestions above and I think you will be in good shape.

I have an 07 XLT screw 6ft and its a great off roader. I have a 2.5" level on the front, putting an extra inch in the rear, pro comp shocks, I have 265s on it now, MT's but im going to goto a 33/34" AT tire from now on, smoother on road, less wear etc. my truck has taken me everywhere I wanted/needed to go. and with a big grin on my face. its the first truck I want to buy after my lease!
