I don't use my truck that often for towing and hauling, but knowing that when i want to tow or haul somthing i don't have to worry about it. A full size pickup and a V8 engine gives me peace of mind. In my opinion if your going to buy a truck do it right.

the old v6 vs. the new v6 is much different so really no comparison.
the old v6 (3.4 i believe) as for speed is about the same as our 5.4 in acceleration (friend raced one and it was about a car length behind) and the new 4.0 are quick lil suckers.

if you get an ext. cab you will regret it, there worthless and no one fits in the back sit without sitting sideways and its still not big enough for the shoulders.

if you decide on one 4 door is the only way to go

One thing to remember is how quick Tacomas rust compared to Fords. My Ford also gets much better gas mileage then my works Tacoma.

I think you've found out that there's a number of Toyota haters here, but this is a Ford site you know. I've looked very seriously at the Tacoma and there's one very big reason I like them - RESALE VALUE. Sure, it isn't a big or fast or poweful as an F-150, but not everybody needs that. Take a look at resale value - especially with silly big (150,000+ miles) on both trucks. Tacos' still bring blood even with stupid high miles on them. There's a reason for that.

Now I'll just stand aside and get flamed all to death.

Is there a rear gear ratio difference between the 4x4 XLT or Lariat trims vs a FX4? Is it enough to effect MPG that much? The stock 4:10's in my Ranger FX4 give the truck all kinds of power, but it hurts the MPG when cruising the interstate at 70 MPH @ nearly 3000 RPM (5 speed manual tranny).

DON'T DO IT. You'll regret your decision 10x10. Trust me. I did.

I traded a 2004 Lariat Screw 4x4 for an 06 2wd Tacoma 4dr and hated every second I owned it. Yeah, it does get slightly better mpg and is slightly quicker, but it is not worth the tradeoff for a full sized truck. I am still PAYING for my decision, but after a year I got rid of it for my beautiful 06 Lariat SCREW 4x4 and won't ever go back to a compact or midsized truck....regardless of what might be "better".

Even for a 4 door, the Tacoma is cramped. I tried putting a baby seat in the middle back and I had to adjust the seat, then my knees touched the dash. It rattled and even had the dreaded steering wheel nibble. Second gear vibrated and would groan going into reverse. I never could get the seat to fit me, either too far up or too far back. Plus, if you're over 6ft., your butt will go to sleep on long rides because of the lumbar and narrow seats. I can go on........

I had an 04 F=150 Supercab and didn't like the rear suicide doors. I then bought a 2006 DC Tacoma. I liked it. There was plenty of room for me, power was good for a V6 and I was getting around 17-19 mpg's city and low 23ish on the highway. The reason I went back to the ford were small things like power seats, power rear window, and reverse sensors which my 04 F-150 had but my 07 doesn't. My problem is I get the itch to buy every couple of years and that something to do with going back to a Ford also. I plan on keeping this one for quite some time.

Was this a 4x4? 4.0L/automatic tranny?

I haven't sat in a Toyota pickup in the last ten years.
Today I land at Syracuse, heading North.
I wanted a 4WD rental, so they gave me a '08 Tundra 4dr.
The only thing I WON'T be able to do is really open it up, conditions are bad up here.

None of the people I work with who came up want to drive in this mess.
We went to dinner with six people packed in the Tundra.

Have always had a Ford truck. Three Rangers, then a 92 F150, great truck and still going now as a farm truck. (sold it to a friend)

Went to Toyota to try to buy a Tacoma and for the life of me couldn't do it. The guys at one dealer were great and did everything I asked to show me trucks let me do anything I wanted. My wife felt cramped in the Taco. She sat in 04 F150 we now have and was sold.

Having had Fords, Lincolns, Mercurys, Rangers, it would have been hard for me to go Toyota. I tried, I really did, but couldn't do it.

They promised great gas milage, resale, and bla bla bla.

They simply want to much money for their stuff. If I stop looking at the fact (?????) that toyota is "The Best" and quit thinking about gas milage, I have to say I like a Ford truck better and that is all there is to that. I like the way it looks, drives, sounds, (Flowmasters) and feels when I sit in it. I just like it.

So Toyota can keep their overpriced trucks and sell them to anyone who wants "the best".

I will drive the one I like the best, Ford F150, and I paid a third of the price for mine, preowned.
