Not a bad idea - Smokestone is a weird color - looks silvery most of the time but under certain light it takes on a gold or even beige tone. I've read here where it is a very limited color. Originally I went with a dark grey stripe which looked great in the shade but almost disappeared in sunlight. Never thought of brown - though I hate that color - copper maybe. Hey, they're vinyl - maybe I'll change them every couple of years?!

Clear is MUCH BETTER !!
This way you can still maintain that level of protection a bug shield provides to your paint, yet not look "stuck on".
IMHO, no truck (with the exception of a black truck) looks good with a smoked bug shield now that I have seen how good a clear one is.
In this pic :

You can't even tell I have a bug shield.....
Get a clear one if you still want to avoid chipped paint.
You can rattle can those clear ones to make 'em match your truck color and they "disappear" even more. Make sure you ONLY paint the back side of the deflector or you'll get chips like crazy. Good luck, anyone out there has a painted one, send us some pics. I had one on my Silverado, but no longer own that truck or I'd post for you.
