Faded plastic.

How many guys have all of the plastic on the FX4's faded out and look like crap. Is this somthing that can be fixed under warrenty or not. I have had the ford dealership replace the fender flares because they looked like a zebra and am fixing tho have them look at the windsheild cowling as mine has come up. I guess I just want the mirrors and grill fixed also.

Thanks JR

Have you used anything to keep them in good condition?
It's a bit like never waxing the truck and saying that the paint looks bad...?
I've had the same issue on my sport trac because I bought it used, but never on my 98 ranger with similar fenders, after 140k miles. I've had good results from putting something like tire shine foam on the plastic and rubbing it in with a sponge after washes. I'm sure there is a better product out there though.
The plastic just dries up if you don't do something to maintain it.

theres a product called Back to Black made by Mothers that you should be able to find at most auto part stores. its not as greasey as tire shine or armor all. just rub it in and on really faded plastics you may ave to le it dry and apply a second or third coat. it comes out nice, but like everything else, its not a permanant solution, rain will eventually wash it away. i dont think theres anything you can do to prevent the fading, except of course havin the pieces painted...

Like Smok][n said, Back to Black or paint. If the dealer replaces the pieces under warranty, even better...

Search Google for plastic dye. Don't waste your time and money for non-permanent solutions.

Back to Black is junk and causes more problems. Paint the plastic parts with Krylon Fusion. Bondo Retore Black works well on the bed rails, but I wouldn't use it anywhere else. Fusion is a more permanent fix.

I used it on my bed rails and it dried white in the grain, in about a week. I used a brush to get some of it out, but never got it all. I threw the bottle away.

Back to black and plastic dye costs the same. Do you want to reapply every few months or years?

Try a product called black wow. I have the same problem and have heard this product works very well. I just got a bottle and am waiting until it is warm enough to try it. It is a dye and a little bit goes a long way.

Tanks for the input guys. I guess I am just upset that this stuff was not painted like it was on my 03 FX4.

The Krylon does it do well over the textured surface we have on all of the plastic. I have thought about painting all of it DSG and be done with it.

You can paint it with Krylon Fusion or use Black Wow. Stop by the care & detailing section to learn more.
