Garmin Nuvi Hardwire Question

I have a 2006 fx4 scab and i am wanting to hardwire my garmin gps. I think i will go to the fuse box to get my power. I want it to cut off when the key is off so can anyone give me the best fuse for this? After i tap into the fuse box will i just run the black wire from the gps to a ground? Will i need to put another inline fuse in if i go directly into the fuse box? If so what amp fuse?

just get an add a circuit from advance and look for one of the fuses like the radio, run power from that, and ground it to the frame or any other ground you could splice into.

My only question is does the cig lighter plug on the garmin do any voltage regulation? if it does, then just wire a cig lighter up the same way behind the dash and plug her in. This is probably what I am going to do.

My suggestion would be to do the 'add-a-circuit' using the cigarette lighter as well. I did this, but I used it to add a 12V power source inside the arm console. I also moved the AUX minijack from the tray to the arm console. So I have my iPod connection and power source inside the arm console.

I feel like a moron asking this but do our trucks use the small or the big fuses? So if i do the add a circuit i will not need another in line fuse for the power wire?

Jpaye,

I am going to mount it on the very lower left side of the windshield, right where the north carolina inspection stickers used to go. The bottom of it will actually sit flush on top of the dash. That my plan if it doesnt look right i will change and post.

I bought the hardwire from amazon and then ran it off of the power to the radio.

Turns on and off by itself.

Don't know about the wire, but I have a nuvi 255w that I hardwired. Spliced a new 12v outlet into the cig lighter outlet, and have the power plugged into that. I have it mounted on top of the dash, where the rubber mat sits in the center. This way, I just throw a hat over the nuvi when I park, and no one even knows there is a gps there. Got the old one ripped off, so I'm pretty careful about keeping it hidden.
