Paint chipping on painted Roush grille

Sanded the grille with 400 paper, used Kylon fusion satin black. Started to chip almost right away and is getting worse day after day.
Did I do something wrong?????
How is your painted grille holding out?????
At this rate I will be repainting every month.

Talked to the line x shop, they said they would have a little better luck with it sticking but given time it would chip just as bad as paint.
Said he would do it but it would be like throwing money away.
Phoned Roush they said they have no plans to make a black one for our trucks.

Ya I did alot of highway over the holidays. Still was hoping for alittle better result. I'm on the highway aleast once a month and that still means repainting once a month or the grille looks like a POS.

have you guys tried using a plastics paint? gotta remember this grille is plastic and it will see some movement/flex.

a plastics paint should adhere better, and be more pliant

The Krylon Fusion paint is for plastics. They advertise that no sanding or priming is necessary.

Maybe in this case a special plastics primer that promotes adhesion would be beneficial?

Considering they are painting chrome I believe that's where the paint is chipping.

there are a few basics to painting stuff. you guys have got me wondering if y'all are doing them

1. Prep the surface
2. Clean using a solvent that leaves no residuals
3. Primer with a good quality undercoat
4. apply topcoat
5. apply clearcoat if necessary

the krylon stuff is good stuff, but it's only as good as the base layer. and if you're going straight ontop of the slick plastic chrome, it stands to reason it's flaking off. Nothing really there to adhere to

Sanded mine with 220 grit. Sprayed it with adhesion promoter. Painted it with PPG 9000 Black, DXR 80 hardener and reducer. Been painted for about a year and a half with no chipping or peeling.
