I'm not trying to knock on the flareside bed, but how or who were these trucks originally marketed for? Is there a specific purpose for the flareside/stepside beds or is it just a niche thing?

Personally just always liked the style better. Stylesides have always lacked just that, Style, imho.

I can't give a a for sure answer, but I would guess that it is just for something different. I do have to say that I like having the steps on the side of the bed, specifically the front of the bed, for washing the truck. It comes in real handy for washing the back window and the top of the cab without messing with the tonneau cover.

But do also have to say that I wish that I had a regular old style side bed and not the flareside. Mostly because of the narrow tailgate opening. It makes loading my 4-wheelers and also pallets of material a PITA at times.

I just wish that you could remove the tie downs without having a huge hole there after you take it off. That step in the front side of the bed closer to the cab does come in handy.

Flareside trucks are part of the automotive heritage. Looking through my Ford History Book, Ford trucks before about 1961 were all Flareside. Hope Ford continues to manufacture `Retro' flareside beds as most others have stopped.
